Candidates take a stand on debate over Islamic center near Ground Zero Greenwich Time .....In response to an interview request, Blumenthal's campaign said he was tied up in meetings.... ....A total of 156 victims of the terrorist attacks were from Connecticut, 26 of whom had ties to Greenwich, the hometown of both Senate candidates, as well as U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn. A spokeswoman for Himes said the freshman lawmaker, who is up for re-election in November, was on vacation with his family and unavailable for comment........ State Sen. Dan Debicella, R-Shelton, who won a three-way primary last week for the GOP nomination in the district represented by Himes, frowned on the prospect of the Islamic center near the site. "I am all for freedom of religion, but it doesn't seem like this is the right location for this," Debicella said. "This is something that's very emotional for a lot of Fairfield County families who lost someone or knew someone who died on Sept. 11.".... ...... It's just a sensitivity issue," McMahon said. "Nine-eleven was a horrendous attack on our country, and I just think building the mosque there (is) an unnecessary reminder and rubs salt in the wound." Maureen Colligan, a Greenwich resident who lost her younger brother, Kevin Cleary, in the attacks, said she has no problem lumping the two groups together. "The way I feel is that day, nine years ago, all rules and laws were broken by the same people of the same religious beliefs," Colligan said. "I believe it would be a travesty to allow the memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11 to be degraded by building a mosque at ground zero. It's an insult to their families and friends as well. There must be a compromise that does not offend." Colligan rejects the view that opposition to the project infringes on religious freedom, saying that there well are over 1,200 mosques nationwide..... =============================== And Hearst Newspaper's Plagiarizing Political Writer Jonathan Kantrowitz Wont Tell You This, But We Will...... | ||
