When it comes to retailing and shopping, Greenwich is a tale of two towns. There is Greenwich Avenue, and then there are the many smaller neighborhood stores and shopping districts.
It's not exactly a tale of the haves and the have-nots, more like the haves and the have-a-lots. But the story is interesting in that it brings into sharp relief the difference between the Greenwich of the mind, as seen through the lens of its national reputation as home of the rich and (in)famous, and the Greenwich of the neighborhoods, as seen through life in its smaller villages.
The Avenue's emergence as our version of Chicago's Miracle Mile or Beverly Hills's Rodeo Drive is a well-known story often told. What was once the town's central shopping district is now a regional retail mecca, luring shoppers from far and wide, while many Greenwich residents do their best to avoid it on weekends.....
