The (former) Schneider Children's Hospital of New Hyde Park will now be called the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center following a $50 million dollar donation by the Greenwich, CT couple's family foundation.
Founded in 1983, the Cohen Medical Center is the only hospital on Long Island solely devoted to "providing the highest level of care that addresses the needs of children, from premature babies to adolescents, and treats everything from childhood diseases to cancer and epilepsy." Special services also include programs treating depression, congenital deformaties, hyperactivity, deafness, Lyme Disease, eating disorders and food allergies, as well as dentistry and much more. Each unit has its own nursing and social work staffs, as well as playrooms. The Center was also named "one of America's Best children's hospitals" by U.S. News & World Report in 2008.
Cohen is a billionaire hedgefund manager, and the founder of SAC Capital Advisors, a Stamford, Connecticut-based hedge fund focusing mostly on equity market strategies.
He and his wife (who have seven children between them) consider pediatric care a vital issue. The two have long donated to children's hospitals in the region. This donation will be used to add 50 beds to the pediatric intensive care and medical surgery units.
