News:

• A new Central Greenwich fire station made the most recent cuts in the $339-million town budget but the Greenwich High School auditorium is getting postponed. The budget process will continue for a month.
• The YWCA awarded nine women with Brava awards at the Hyatt Regency last Friday.
• Greenwich town employees will vote on whether they want to be represented by GMEA or merge with LIUNA in an election March 3.
• Dr. Gloria Cohen will be on call in Vancouver as she joins the United States Olympic team as a team doctor.
• A new truck for the town’s fire police highlights the work the volunteers do “protecting the protectors.”
• Julie Pollock of Wasilla, Alaska can trace her roots back to the owners of the Thomas Lyon House in Greenwich. She shared photographs and stories with the ‘Post.’
• A new Youth Committee sets roots at the Bruce Museum with the launch of an antique map exhibit.
• The Caregiver Circle has returned to offer those who are caring for an adult a six-week program of support, insight and resources.
• Greenwich High School coach Paul Burke has resigned his post as coach and social studies teacher after a third conviction for driving under the influence.
• Greenwich High School has kicked off a new program called Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) to help students who are “average” to find greater success in school.
• Demand for ranches is growing in Greenwich but where is the supply? Realtors say there aren’t enough of the one-story homes to go around.


Opinion

• Jim Cameron dishes on the ‘real deal’ about the rails in the tri-state region. “High-speed” doesn’t have the same definition here as it does in Europe. • Town representatives say the state needs to take fiscal responsibility and tighten its spending belt to achieve economic recovery.
• Patty Sechi says the community support made the new Armstrong Court garden possible.
• Cos Cob resident Amr Aly says T-Mobile needs to take responsibility in the ongoing tower dispute.
• Tony Cossu of Greenwich reflects on the days when the town’s drum corps and the Kights of Columbus worked hand-in-hand.
• Student driver Lacey Henry of Convent of the Sacred Heart says experienced drivers with road rage need to cool off.

• Can the Federal Reserve rein in credit? Andrew Szabo says the Feds need to make some tough choices.

Sports


• Greenwich High School boys and girls track teams may not be large but boys finished 10th and girls finished 11th at the FCIAC championship meet recently.
• Greenwich ski team is making a strong push toward the post-season.
• Greenwich High School cheerleaders finish third overall at the FCIACs. They have their sights on the class LL tournament.
• Greenwich High School girls hockey blasted the Staples High School Wreckers
Cardinals wrestlers bashed the Bruins in a Town Crown match.


About Town

• Nine students from Greenwich have been named to the Bucknell dean’s list.
• Brunswick School has announced the Greenwich students who have made the school’s honor roll
• Stanwich students are helping to save lives by participating in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
• Parkway School fifth graders are helping Haiti by collecting medical supplies and clothing.
• Greenwich Education and Prep has been granted full accreditation.
• Becker Salon is offering $50 haircuts to raise money for relief efforts in Haiti this Valentine’s Day.
• Shelley Levine and David Kimball have been named to Bollinger’s President’s Club.
• Greenwich Choral Society will entertain your valentine with Gershwin tunes this weekend.
• Byram Shubert Library plans a week of vacation workshops next week.
• Les Beaux Arts Gallery is home to a collection of watercolor and gouache paintings by Holly Meeker Rom.
