04/21/09 Bill Clark Of "Greenwich Gossip"Opines On David McCumber And The "Yellowich Time"

The Green Kitty Litter Liner, Also Known As The Rag, Or As Bill Clark Likes To Call It.....The Yellowich Time........

Can David McCumber Save the Local Rag?

In the revolving door of local newspaper management by the Hearst media chain, the Local Rag, aka Yellowwich Time, so known for the color of the journalism it has historically published, will have a new editor as of April 27. And for a change, it appears that he may be a winner.

David McCumber comes to Greenwich from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the venerable Left Coast newspaper that recently ceased to issue a printed version and became an online-only viritual newspaper. Although moving to the Local Rag sounds like a fairly substantial demotion to your scribe, he is nonetheless impressed with Mr. McCumber's resume, which includes being a published poet and author. "I'm not so much focused on dollars and cents but [sic] on good journalism," he is quoted as saying recently. Well, his grammar may be a bit weak, but the sentiment is laudable.

But can he save the Local Rag, with its motley staff of retreads and also-rans? Will he be able to get his underlings to start checking their facts and getting their stories straight, as it were? Your scribe wishes him well, but it's a little bit like trying to cleanse the Augean stables. There's an awful lot of horse manure still cluttering up the place.

Or, on the other hand, is Mr. McCumber here to preside over the transition of Yellowwich Time, too, into a virtual newspaper? Maybe he has been given a certain period of time in which to try to pull up its socks, after which he may be put in charge of cutting it off at the knees. Time will tell.

The Daily Weekly - New Job for Ex-P-I Editor - Seattle Weekly
Former P-I Managing Editor David McCumber has landed on his feet in a new job with Hearst, the people who shut down the print edition of his former paper last month. McCumber is becoming editor of two Hearst newspapers in Connecticut, The Advocate of Stamford and the Greenwich Time, according to Editor & Publisher. He's also been named editorial director of Hearst's Connecticut Newspaper Group, which includes two dailies and six weekly newspapers.

McCumber was hoping one of his staff's final stories might show up on the winner's list of the 2009 Pulitzer Prizes announced today. No such luck.

The Las Vegas Sun won for public service for exposing a high death rate among construction workers on the Las Vegas Strip, and The New York Times took home five prizes, one for breaking the call-girl scandal that destroyed Gov. Eliot Spitzer's political career. The Detroit Free Press won for local reporting for its coverage that brought down the city's mayor, sharing the prize with the East Valley Tribune of Arizona for its reporting on controversial Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.....

But How Will Big Local Strories And Investigative Reports Get Produced With A Daily News Paper That Has Only 20 Reporters In The News Room?

Might investigative journalism be ready to be re-born at the grassroots?

Until recently, this question wasn't even asked much. If there was worry about what would happen to watchdog reporting with the decline of newspapers and other legacy media, it was expressed at the national level. It's why the launch of ProPublica,, the investigative journalism non-profit, got such acclaim, and now why many of us will be paying close attention to the establishment of the Huffington Post Investigative Fund.

But look what's happening now at the community level. Last summer came the launch of Texas Watchdog, which got one-year foundation funding to play watchdog over state government and other Texas institutions. Two months ago Investigative Voice in Baltimore sprang to life.

Now David McCumber of the dear-departed Seattle Intelligencer is trying to rustle up funding for an investigative journalism site focusing on issues in the West. And a gang from the RIP Rocky Mountain News is aiming to launch InDenverTimes with the idea of making investigative work one of its centerpieces.

A look 'behind the counter' at entrepreneuring jeweler, TerryBetteridge
Greenwich Citizen - ‎3 hours ago‎

Updated: 04/21/2009 09:58:25 AM EDT
When Terry Betteridge learned that the Cash for Gold enterprise holding forth in the Hyatt Regency last week was pulling people in selling their gold and silver, he was curious. He wanted "to see what those guys are up to."

Terry has built his successful Betteridge Jewelers business "organically," he said, taking advantage of what comes along, and learning by doing.

"Knowing nothing" of his father's jewelry business until he was called to its rescue in 1975 was the key to his success, he believed. "I didn't understand modern (jewelry) fashion at all. I kept being a kid through college. All I knew was the old stuff. I'm a history freak. I go to auctions. I knew there was an under bidder. I figured it out."......

...."We made $300,000 the first year," he said. "As of a year and a half ago we made $100 million."......

.....Three years ago Terry brought in veteran Greenwich police detective, Cornell Abruzzini, as his in house security man, who has taken Terry's security to state of the art.

"We have a triple redundancy security system with recordings going on off site," said Abruzzini. Betteridge employees in all locations have been trained by Abruzzini to spot those sleight of hand con artists, and to identify fraudulent credit cards.

Abruzzini will soon have a higher profile as Terry is placing him on the street to patrol the immediate area of Betteridge and be a lookout for other jewelers located nearby. He was offering his own security guard in place of the Elm Street "corner cop," lost to police Chief David Ridberg's new cost cutting measures Terry told the RMA. It was a corner cop that helped foil the 2006 robbery of Terry's store.......

Here Is Apeek At What Blogs Might Look Like When They Are Incoprporated Into The Greenwich Time Under New Editor David McCumber. It Looks Very Simular To Gannett Did With The LoHud Site In Westchester County......

Former PI managing editor takes job in Connecticut
Seattle Post Intelligencer - The Big Blog
David McCumber, former managing editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, is taking his talent out East.

After more than 30 years in the newspaper business, including nine years strengthening investigative and local coverage at the P-I, McCumber will become editor of two of Hearst's newspapers in Connecticut -- The Advocate of Stamford and the Greenwich Time, as well as editorial director of Hearst's Connecticut Newspaper Group.

He'll begin April 27.

"David has been a valuable members of the Hearst Newspapers team for the last decade and we are excited to have his leadership at 'The Advocate' and 'Greenwich Time,'" said Hearst Newspapers President Steven R. Swartz. "He will also bring a wealth of editorial experience and journalistic vision to all out Connecticut papers."

In addition to his duties in Connecticut, McCumber will work with Phil Bronstein, editor-at-large for Hearst Newspapers and the San Francisco Chronicle, and investigative reporters across Hearst's 15 daily and 49 weekly newspapers to coordinate investigative projects throughout the chain.

McCumber was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 at the Arizona Daily Star and is the author of four nonfiction books, including An Air That Kills, which he co-wrote with former P-I investigative reporter Andrew Schneider.

We Have All Seen The Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Boring Blogs The That Are Produced By Gannet's In House Bloggers At The Lo-Hud Site......

Hopefully, The Greenwich Time Wont Go The Corporate Gannet Route Of Boring Reporters Being Forced To Type Out Another Dry And Lifeless Daily Blog Post.

The New Greenwich Time Editor David McCumber, Has A Real Chance To Seek Out Real Citizen Journalists Who Go Places In Town And Experience Things That Hearst Newspapers Just Don't Know About.

Take Greenwich Roundup For Instance......

Here Is A Real Citizen Journalist Who Was Blind At Birth In His Right Eye And Sees Very Little Out Of His Left Eye Which Is Crossed.

The Right Eye Developed Glaucoma At Age Seven And Had To Be Removed At Before The Glaucoma Spread To His Left Eye And Took Away What Little Vision He Had.

Greenwich Roundup Doesn't Drive Around Town. He Walks And Meets The Members Of Greenwich Society That The Greenwich Citizen, The Greenwich Post And The Greenwich Time Ignores.

Greenwich Roundup Is Self Employed He Operates A Cleaning Service That Cares For Buildings In Town. He Has A Wife Who Is Korean And Most Recently Operated A Store In The Byram Section Of Town.

Greenwich Roundup Has Two Sons, Both Of Whom Are Still Finishing Their Education. The Youngest Son Is An Iraq War Hero Who Recently Returned Home With A Bronze Star And Is Forming A Veterans Club At Norwalk Community College.

Greenwich Roundup Is An Elected Official On The Representative Town Meeting, But Has Became Disillusioned With The Byram District 4 RTM, Because It Would Rather Talk About Goose Poop In The Byram Park Instead Of The Drugs And Crime That Infest Byram's Streets.

Before Being On The RTM Greenwich Roundup Served As An Election Official At The Western Middle School In 12 Hour Shifts Helping Greenwich Citizen's To Vote.

Greenwich Roundup Used To Volunteer At Many Groups In Fairfield And Westchester County, But Now Has Shifted To Volunteering At His Place Of Worship Which Is Harvest Time Church.

Greenwich Roundup Serves Refreshments At Harvest Time Church And Likes Helping Take Care Of The Building, Because Greenwich Roundup Seven Months Ago Converted From Judaism To Christianity.

Greenwich Roundup Is Not An Israeli, But A Levite, Isreali's Got Land And Levites Did Not. Family Tradition Said That We Were Not Kohanim("Priests"), But A Gershonite, Who Cared For The Temple Building And Filled Different Roles In The Tabernacle And Later In The Temple Services.

Traditionally, Levites' Principal Roles In The Temple Included Singing Psalms During Temple Services, Performing Construction And Maintenance For The Temple, Serving As Guards, And Performing Other Services. Levites Also Served As Teachers And Judges, Maintaining Cities Of Refuge For Those In Trouble In Biblical Times. .

Technically, Greenwich Roundup's Blind Eye Made Him Ritually Unclean To Truly Serve In A Temple In The Proper Way.

Maybe The Reason Greenwich Roundup Like Helping Others And Taking Care Of Buildings Is That These Traits Are In His DNA.

Greenwich Roundup's Wife Was Buddhist, But Converted To Christianity Two Years Ago.

My Wife Is A very Forgiving And Compassionate Person, Who Does Not Hold A Grudge. But Greenwich Roundup Follows The Marine Code....

No Better Friend - No Worse Enemy

However, Greenwich Roundup Is Constantly Pester By His Wife And Church Members Who Say We Should Be Kind To And Pray For The Unjust Members Of Greenwich Society.

Greenwich Roundup Has A Hard Time Turning The Other Cheek, Because There Is A Big Chip On My Shoulder.

Plus It Stings When Someone Slaps You In The Face!!!!

Being Of Jewish Decent It Is Hard To Get The Torah Teaching That Says "An Eye For An Eye And A Tooth For A Tooth" Out Of My Head.

Sometimes, My Fellow Christians Forget That The Loving Jesus Said That He Will Fry The Unjust In Hell.

My Only Worry Is That I Maybe One Of The Unjust, So I Am Trying To Learn And Be Kind And Compassionate To Even Those I Perceive As Unjust In Greenwich.

But It Is Hard To Pray For A Greenwich Billionaire Hedge Fund Manager Being Taxed At 15%, While His Secretary Is Taxed At 35% And Worries About Losing Her Home.

At The End Of The Month When You Know That Some Small Child Of A Byram Day Laborer Is Going To Bed Hungry, Because Cold Hard Cash Has To Be Handed Over To A Backcountry Family Who Wastes So Much Food.

It Just So Hard To Pray For Things That You Just Don't Understand.

...I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God - Jesus Christ

A recent conference sponsored by the South West Regional Planning Agency held some startling examples in that poster-boy of affluence, Greenwich. This 67 square mile city of 61,000 has 5,545 municipal employees: teachers, cops, firefighters and the like. However, 67 percent of those workers don’t live in Greenwich, but commute daily from Danbury, Bridgeport, Westchester, N.Y., and even Long Island.

They spend an average of 103 minutes per day just getting to and from work, paying more than $2,000 a year for gas. Combined, they add 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, just by their commuting.

In a city where the median home price is $2 million, the average Greenwich city worker makes $65,000. And because these teachers, civil servants and such have to come so far, they have to be paid more. The average teacher in Greenwich earns $12,338 a year more than their counterparts elsewhere in the state. These higher wages cost city taxpayers almost $19 million a year. But their larger paychecks come at the cost of lost time and expense on the road.

The Greenwich schools spend $10,000 to $15,000 recruiting and training each new teacher. But after five years of commuting (75 percent of the 912 teachers don’t live in Greenwich), they burn out, leave and find jobs elsewhere. Between 1998 and 2007, 581 teachers left Greenwich for reasons other than retirement and 81 percent of them had less than eight years on the job.

EMS workers in Greenwich have it even worse, averaging 151 minutes (2.5 hours!) commute time. Just how fresh and ready for life-saving work do you think you’d be with a commute like that?

Greenwich is not unique. All of the towns on “the Gold Coast” rely on importing personnel from far afield. Schools in Darien often announce “snow days” not because its roads are impassable, but because teachers can’t drive through the snows farther north from communities like Danbury where they can afford to live.

And what about the people that bag your groceries, clean your home or pump your gas? Where do you think they live? Just drive the Boston Post Road some morning and you’ll see them waiting for the bus.

Fairfield County has its own “migrant workers.” We couldn’t live with out them, but apparently we don’t want to live with them. Just listen to the local debates about adding “affordable housing” in these affluent towns.
Whether because of their nationality or economic status, the expressed aversion to “those people” living in “our” towns is clearly xenophobic if not racist........
