HARTFORD — Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz declared herself the Democratic front-runner for governor one day after Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced her retirement.
Bysiewicz trumpeted a new Quinnipiac University poll that shows her leading a crowded Democratic field and closely trailing the Republican governor in hypothetical match-ups.
“I think the good news about the Quinnipiac poll is that it shows not only would I be the strongest primary candidate, but I would also be the strongest general election candidate in the race,” she said.
However, Bysiewicz downplayed the results showing her only 3 percentage points ahead of Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont in a Democratic primary.
Lamont just formed an exploratory last week. Bysiewicz set hers up 10 months ago, and she has been secretary of the state since 1999.
Moreover, the 3-point lead was within the poll’s margin of error. Poll director Douglas Schwartz called it “statistically insignificant.”…
