09/28/09 You Can Commenmt On This Greenwich Time Article About A Town Sex Offender At Topix If You Want To

Sex offender who opposed child safety ordinance heads to trial - TOPIX GREENWICH

A town sex offender who spoke out vehemently against banning sex offenders from loitering near schools and playgrounds will face trial Tuesday for failing to comply with the conditions of his release.

Ernest Drupals, 38, of 29 Carrona Drive, was charged in February 2008 with violation of his probation as a sex offender by Stamford police. Police said Drupals moved from Stamford to Greenwich without notifying authorities of his change of address.

Under state law, registered sex offenders face a Class D felony charge if they fail to comply with any registration requirements, which includes notifying Connecticut State Police in writing within five days of when they move or change their names....

....Drupals attorney, Mickey Sherman, was not available for comment Monday.

However, Sherman previously stated that Drupals had been diligent in following the law and did not believe his client ever violated the conditions of his release.

After pleading not guilty last year, Drupals elected to have a judge hear his case. Law enforcement officers are expected to testify at the court trial, which is only expected to last a few hours.

Drupals could face a maximum sentence of 5 years and a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted.

Lavery, Tesei at odds over elderly tax deferral plan - TOPIX GREENWICH
A little over a month before the first selectman's race is decided, Republican incumbent Peter Tesei and Democratic challenger Lin Lavery are clashing over a proposal to allow low- and middle-income seniors to put off paying their property taxes until after they die or sell their home.

Lavery, a selectman who came into office two years ago at the same time as Tesei, accused her opponent Monday of trying to railroad the plan through before the Nov. 3 municipal election to score points with elderly voters.

"I clearly feel this is political," Lavery said in an interview with Greenwich Time. "I feel you're trying to placate the seniors who were not happy that the (existing) elderly tax relief program was not fully funded...."

Police respond to 'UFO' sighting - TOPIX GREENWICH

It wasn't a bird, a plane or Superman, but residents of downtown Greenwich thought a myriad of lights in the sky just may have been an unidentified flying object passing overhead Saturday night.

The bright, moving lights in the sky caused several people to call police to report a possible UFO sighting. Some reports indicated there had been 30 to 40 individual lights glowing in the night sky.

The questions prompted police to send two marine officers to investigate the sighting.

Freund wants community poll on school - TOPIX GREENWICH

Parents, teachers, students and community leaders would not have to wait until 2011 or later to make their opinions about the school system known to administrators, under a proposal being pushed by the superintendent.

Schools chief Sidney Freund wants the Harris Interactive School Poll administered later in the 2009-10 school year. The community satisfaction survey has been given every two years since 2006.

The Board of Education cut funding for the survey earlier this year to save about $38,000 in a 2009-10 budget that had to be trimmed by $4 million to help counter a town-wide revenue shortfall....

Psychic charged with lying about Greenwich Avenue attack - TOPIX GREENWICH

Despite her intuitive powers, psychic Janet Lee probably did not see an arrest in her future, especially just weeks after alleging she was the victim of an assault outside her store on Greenwich Avenue.

However, the self proclaimed "foremost psychic in New England" was arrested by Greenwich police over the weekend after detectives said she lied about being attacked in town by rival psychics in over the summer.

Lee, 35, of 143 Wolfpit Ave., Norwalk, was charged Saturday with falsely reporting an incident, interfering with an officer and providing a false statement after turning herself into police on an arrest warrant....

09/28/09 MTA Backing Down on Free Use of Train Schedules, Letters

Last month we noticed a guy who'd created an iPhone app for Metro-North schedules was embroiled in a copyright/fair use dispute with the MTA. The Authority wanted big bucks to provide him with information he was loading more efficiently himself. Now Chris Schoenfeld, creator of StationStops, seems off the hook -- as may be other developers who want to put train info on your phone.

The New York Times says "a longstanding fight against a Greenwich, Conn., commuter, who created an application with Metro-North Railroad schedules, suddenly ended with no money changing hands." And though his blog doesn't mention it, Schoenfeld's Twitter feed announced on the 22nd, "ITS OVER! CONGRATULATIONS TO MTA FOR PEACEFULLY ENDING THEIR LEGAL BATTLE WITH STATIONSTOPS!"...

The fees MTA had been demanding of another man who made an LIRR schedule app are being withdrawn, too. MTA says it's just "trying to evolve," but the Times suggests "pressure from politicians and technology advocates" were at play. Other cities have cooperated with developers on similar apps, and in June Mayor Bloomberg started a contest, inviting techies to put public city data into software applications. (Maybe soon you'll be able to download David Yassky's "It's Your Money" info to your phone, so the next time you're outraged by a city agency you can see how much money they got to serve you so poorly.)

Try as we might, we can't find a downside to this trend. It's even got Schoenfeld and San Francisco's Joe Moore -- who was battling New York's MTA, which apparently thought it owned all colored dots with letters in them, over the right to twit his local system with t-shirt logos like "L-ate," and won -- blogging about things besides their legal struggles, like a coffee machine in Schoenfeld's case, and business team best practices in Moore's. Well, okay, maybe it's not all good.

09/28/09 Greenwich couple may help fund needed Stonington animal shelter repairs

Stonington - The town is looking at renovating and expanding the aging animal control facility and a Greenwich couple, who have a home here, have indicated they may help pay for the work.

First Selectman Ed Haberek said Sunday that the anonymous couple have been in discussions with Police Chief J. Darren Stewart about the work, and have hired their own contractor to look at what work needs to be done and how much it would cost.

Haberek said a resident recently asked him to look at the facility, which is located at the landfill on Greenhaven Road, because she was concerned about the deteriorating condition of the building.

Come winter, the ant i s warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
Be responsible for yourself

MODERN VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC
show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be
, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog
appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green
.'

Acorn
stages a demonstration in front of the ant 's house where the news stations film the group singing, 'We shall overcome.' Rev. Jeremiah Wright then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid
exclaim i n an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ants food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he d oesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY
:
Be careful how you vote in 2010.

09/27/09 Goodbye Topix: Greenwich Time Editor David McCumber Is Sick And Tired Of Hearing From Greenwich Time Readers

The Greenwich Time Once Again Sweeps Controversy Under The Rug

Dear Greenwich Roundup,

Greenwich Time's fear of controversy and perhaps offending special advertisers is evidenced by their shutting off Topix yesterday.

Other than Greenwich Roundup Topix was one of the best sources for the other side of the argument in Greenwich and now it is gone.

Topix got a little silly at times but for the most part the contributors were people who really cared about the town even if they could not afford to live there any more.
Where are the Greenwich Police Officers going to go to have their say about the goings on in town?
Where will the Hamilton Avenue and Glenville school mothers go to be heard?

Left In The Dark In North Mianus

Comment:

Dear Left In The Dark,

This is good news for Greenwich Roundup and bad news for the Greenwich Time, because the voices Greenwich Time editor David McCumber is trying to censor will come to blog.

Greenwich Roundup always gives every voice a chance to be heard, but the Greenwich Time is notorious for only listening to the powers that be at Town Hall and at the Greenwich Board of education.

No wonder, Greenwich blogger Bill Clark calls the newspaper the "Yellowich Time"

When Greenwich Roundup asked a Greenwich Time employee about the missing comments feature , he was told that Hearst Newspapers got rid of the comments entirely and newspaper employees being instructed to tell all readers who complain the following:

If you would like to let the editors know how they feel about the stories Greenwich Time covers, then send a message to our newsroom blog Greenwich Real Time.
When will the Greenwich Time stop screwing over it's loyal readers?

No wonder the Greenwich Time loses money every single day of the year.
Maybe This Is Why The Greenwich Time Hates The Topix Message Forums.....
Join the conversation or just

Observer says.....
These major commercial thefts make the paper. We are hearing privately that there are numerous residential break-ins that never become public knowledge.

Two points:

1) The police department must publicize all residential break-ins so we can appreciate the danger and take steps to protect ourselves and our neighbors.

2) Time to install video cameras to view public spaces in Town.

Fed up taxpayer says....
Yeah, and they said crime was down in town. I don't think so. I've got cameras up on my house, not taking chances. .....

Dan says....
My prediction - the Riverside one will be solved but not the jewelery heist. Also, it is not up to the police to "publicize" anything. It's the job of the press, which as full access to police activities via the freedom of information act. If anything is being white washed (and I'm not saying it is), it would fall on the media and not the police.

andiesroonie says....
where are we with the Margolies murder case?
Can anyone in the GPD explain?
Thank you in advance

Republicano says .....
1.) The Police do not "publicize" anything. The media (newspapers) are given the opportunity to review the incidents that are FOIable...it is up to THEM to publicize the information. The last time I looked, there were no printing presses in the basement of HQ.

2.)No, the Police Dept. should NOT give out all of their information for on-going investigations to the public. They SHOULD NOT share all of the confidential facts regarding the incident as it may hurt the investigation.
All of the small details that could make or break a criminal case are NOT your buisness. AND, the Town of Greenwich has a unit called Community Impact Officers. They are Officers who, among other things, meet with nieghborhood reps and citizens and advise them of crimes occurring in their nieghborhoods and how to avoid being a victim. This unit, previously called Nieghborhood Resource Officers, has been around for several years doing this.

Assuming you are an adult, you should already know how to better protect your property...lock your doors, alarm systems, stop mail delivery when away, ask nieghbors to watch your home when away, etc.

These are basic things that require little thought. What you are now doing here is basically BLAMING the Police for the crimes. Greenwich is a very safe place to live considering its wedged between Stamford and Port Chester and has the biggest drug trafficking avenue (I-95) in the US running right through it.

Stop blaming the Cops and take some responsibilty for your own safety.

Would you blame the Fire Department if you had faulty wiring and you're house burned to the ground? Would you blame the Ambulance service if you ate a high fat diet your whole life and had a heart attack?
former res (Broomall, PA ) says ......
Does the GPD release the fact that there were burglaries, car thefts, vandalism etc in certain neighborhoods?(Without giving details?)

Around here, the paper publishes the addresses of all such crimes - ASAP. I like to know what's going on in my my neighborhood. I don't need details - just the fact that it happened. And where and when.

republicano says .....
Of course they do.

The procedure is...the report is taken by responding patrol officers, then the Detectives do their report detailing their initial investigation...then they submit follow up reports as the investigation progresses.

Normally, the next buisness day after the major crime/investigation, the media, in this case, the Greenwich Times, come into HQ, sit down and review the initial reports.(GPD also has a POI, Public Information Officer that acts as a liaison between the PD and the media)
If the investigation is on-going, juveniles are involved or there is sensitive information that could jeopardize the investigation, this information may be omitted.

former res (Broomall, PA ) says ......
Isn't EVERY case that is fresh and unsolved considered "ongoing?" I would think so.
I still see a difference between here and there. Here, if a house is broken into, a car is stolen etc - we hear about it right away. There, if I read your response correctly, the police will withhold that information - as it is an ongoing investigation (not yet solved). Because it just happened.

The Police Blotter in the Greenwich Time seems to include only solved crimes (with names of the actors)- unless I'm mistaken. I'd want to know about ALL crime in my neighborhood, in a timely way.(Which would mean BEFORE the cases are solved.)

Republicano says .....
Fresh?..yes, It is considered on-going...unless it is a non-violent "minor" offense.
Sometimes in that case, the investigation may be "shelved" (not closed) in favor of higher priority Investigations.

There are so many factors that a lay person does not know about regarding criminal investigations. Lets say for example a town has a rash of robberies in which the bad guys are known to use cell phones during its commision. The Police department may not want that information published, because this would be an excellent way for the Police to identify the perps. Bad guys read the papers too, so what will they do? Forgo the phone use next time they do it. Thats just one example of certain types of information that the public should not be privleged to.

I understand that residents want to know whats going on around them...I'm a home owner also and I keep up on happenings in my area. The public SHOULD know that burglaries are occurring, not only so they can take precautions to safeguard their homes, but the added vigilance can deter crime and aid the Police. It's many of the details that should be kept under wraps.

former res (Broomall, PA ) says ......
I agree.

And as a homeowner I don't care if the thieves are using cell phones.

I just want to know if homes in my neighborhood are being hit. Or if cars are being vandalized or stolen.

Does the GPD release this information immediately to the media regardless of whether the case is solved?

This is what I'm getting at, because I don't recall seeing this type of information in the GT. Only solved crimes.

In my area we know about property crime going on in the area - solved or not.

I would think the GT would publish the information if it were available to them. And also that the public would want to know in a timely manner - about crimes in their neighborhoods - solved or otherwise. It may be in the print verson, but I don't recall ever seeing it.

Hi, I recently saw an article about me concerning the settlement pertaining to the accident I was involved in 4 years ago. The whole ordeal has been extraordinarily trying for my friend's family and I. If at all possible, could you possibly stop Google from indexing the page to show up in their listing or delete the thread? Myself and others as well are trying to move on from this horrible experience, and if you could do this it would be more then appreciated. I understand you value integrity on your web site which is apparent from the mass of content you store about the goings and happenings in greenwich, but the visibility of this older thread brings back the hurt of the loss of a friend, and the loss of a son.

The web site I am referring to is at http://greenwichroundup.blogspot.com/2008/12/120208-greenwich-time-news-links-for.html and the link about stopping a site from being index is located at.

Thank you for your understanding.

COMMENT:
Dear Mr. Kimia,
This story involves a the estate of Justin Brown, a Greenwich teenager killed in a drunken driving accident in 2005, being awarded $2. .3 million in a settlement.
I really dislike drunken driving incidents, because a drunk driver nearly killed my wife about a dozen years back.
Our GMC Jimmy was totaled in the accident.
The drunk driver hit her car and then ran off, but luckily someone got the license plate number.
It appears that you have now paid your debt to society, but there is still a Greenwich teenager whose life was needlessly cut short.
Therefore I would probably lean towards not removing this post.

Lee Dragani, 19, of 131 Washington St., Mamaroneck, and the twins, Benny and Billy Ospino, 21, of 71 Rectory St., were picked up Thursday on felony assault warrants out of Greenwich. The three are wanted in an Aug. 24 attack on a small group of men in the vicinity of 30 S. Water St., Greenwich, Greenwich police said.

A 16-year-old Greenwich girl intervened in the assault and was protecting her face when Dragani struck her across the arm with a chain, Greenwich police said. She was not seriously injured.

The three were recognized in a car heading toward Rye at 8:30 a.m. Thursday and stopped based on the arrest warrants, Port Chester police said.

Greenwich police are still investigating the incident and information on the male victims was not available, Greenwich police Lt. Dan Allen said.

Dragani already faces a felony gang assault charge in Port Chester. Police say he took part in an attack on three Connecticut men early Aug. 23, the day before, the Greenwich assault.

LEADING WITH KINDNESS: HOW GOOD PEOPLE CONSISTENTLY GET SUPERIOR RESULTS
A Short History of Women
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Just Books is pleased to welcome Greenwich and New York City resident and author William F. Baker, Ph.D., as he visits Just Books to sign copies of his newest book Leading with Kindness: How Good People Consistently Get Superior Results (Amacom; $24.95). Bill Baker experienced leading with kindness firsthand during his 20 years at the helm of Educational Broadcasting Corp., parent company of WNET-TV (Channel Thirteen) and WLIW-TV (Channel 21). It inspired him to affirm and refine his notion of what honorable bosses can accomplish. With his friend Michael O'Malley, Ph.D., Baker did extensive research and interviewed dozens of leaders in diverse organizations. They share their insights into strong, effective leadership in Leading with Kindness: How Good People Consistently Get Superior Results. Today, many leaders have realized that when it comes to business, nice guys often finish first. Old-fashioned images of corporate callousness and greed have been replaced by a gentler, more human conception of great leadership. But how does one define "kindness" in the context of business? And what is the best way to "use" this deceptively complex notion as a guiding principle to lead an organization successfully into the future?

YOU'RE ACCEPTED: LOSE THE STRESS. DISCOVER YOURSELF. GET INTO THE COLLEGE THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU.
You're Accepted
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Just Books welcomes Katie Malachuk, author and admissions consultant as she combines her expertise into this new, no-nonsense approach to the college application process in her book, You're Accepeted: Lose The Stress. Discover Yourself. Get into the College That's Right For You (Kaplan Publishing; $21.95).

Malachuk, a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Harvard College with a Masters in Business from Stanford, combines a traditional background with a very different outlook. In addition to experience as a very successful college placement counselor, Katie Malachuk, also utilizes her knowledge as a Yoga instructor to guide students through the application process. According to the U. S. Department of Education, 2009 was the most competitive class in history, with record numbers of high school graduates-and record numbers of applications to colleges and universities throughout the country. With that in mind, parents and students are understandably "stressed out!" Malachuk suggests applying yoga's lessons of self-reflection and focus, to show anxious students how to make themselves more attractive candidates, narrow their lists of potential schools, maximize the effect of their essays and seek out mentors for guidance and recommendations.
