Interim Principal Appointed at Central Middle School
(For immediate release: Greenwich, CT – Friday, August 21, 2009) Principal of Central Middle School, Carol B. Walsh, has notified central administration of her request to leave Greenwich at the end of the first semester of this school year to pursue other career opportunities.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Sidney Freund said, “In an effort to provide leadership continuity and to minimize the number of building leaders at Central Middle School in a given year, and in order to assist in duties resulting from administrator vacancies at the central office, Ms. Walsh will assume various responsibilities in the Professional Learning and Human Resources departments at the Havemeyer Building.”
Bio Brief: Carol B. Walsh
Ms. Walsh was appointed as Principal of Central Middle School in 2006 and in addition to her leadership of the school over the last three years, she has participated in numerous District-wide initiatives. Ms. Walsh has been a member of the RISE (Racial Imbalance, Space Utilization and Declining Enrollment) Task Force, the Secondary School Review Committee, and the TEPL (Teacher Evaluation and Professional Learning) Turnkey Committee.
Ms. Walsh began her career in education in 1971 with the DeKalb County Public Schools in Atlanta, GA. as an 8th-12th grade French teacher. In 1982, she moved to Connecticut and took a position at Middlesex Middle School in Darien as a 7th-9th grade French and Spanish teacher and served as Chair for various curriculum projects. From 1986-1993, Ms. Walsh taught High School French at Acton/Boxborough Regional High School. Returning to Middlesex Middle School in 1993, she served as a French and Spanish teacher, as well as 8th grade Team Leader and World Language Department Chair for the next nine years. In 2002, as part of the complete redesign of the 12 high schools in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was appointed Principal of one of the new high schools of choice. Her focus was to design and open this new high school with the prestigious International Baccalaureate program as its anchor. In 2003, she returned to Connecticut as the Principal of Scofield Magnet Middle School for three years. She has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Sacred Heart University’s Graduate School of Education in Fairfield, CT and continues to speak annually as a guest lecturer.
Throughout her career, Ms. Walsh has been actively involved in numerous professional organizations including, the New England League of Middle Schools (NELMS). She has served as a member of their Board of Directors from 1998-2002. In this capacity, she has served as an educational consultant and presented workshops on a variety of topics including middle school pedagogy, classroom management, team building, and educational technology both at the annual NELMS conferences and throughout New England.
Ms. Walsh received her B.A. with a Major in French/Secondary Education from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI in 1970; her Masters in French/Secondary Education from Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 1975; and her Administrative, 6th Year Certificate from Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT in 2000. In 2002, she was the recipient of the prestigious Dean’s Leadership Award from Sacred Heart.
Superintendent Appoints Interim Principal
The search for a Principal for Central Middle School is underway. Mr. Roger Stenz - retired, thirty-nine (39) year veteran middle school educator with the Greenwich Public Schools - has been appointed Interim Principal of Central Middle School, effective Monday, August 24, 2009.
Mr. Stenz retired in 2003 after fifteen years as Assistant Principal of Eastern Middle School. Beginning his career in education in 1964 as a teacher at Central Junior High School in Greenwich, he spent the next twenty-four years at Central as teacher, Teacher Leader and then Assistant Principal before moving to Eastern Middle School in 1988. Mr. Stenz also acted as Interim Assistant Director for Business Services for the Greenwich Public Schools assisting in a leadership transition period in that department in 2005.
Dr. Freund said, “We are fortunate to have a highly qualified educator with extensive experience in teaching and administration in Greenwich and specifically at Central Middle School to lead the school through this transition.”
