"The Harvest," a must see documentaryPosted in July 6th, 2009 Last week, I had the pleasure of attending an intimate cocktail reception hosted by actress Eva Longoria and her basketball husband Tony Parker, to view a documentary film about children migrant workers. About 50 guests, including special guest, former President Bill Clinton, viewed a trailer of the upcoming film, The Harvest, which tells a story about migrant workers from an adolescent perspective. The film, which is produced by Longoria and Shine Global, follows five children between the ages of 12 and 16, who labor in fields and factories to feed us, lacking the protections offered by the Fair Labor Standards Act that protects ALL other American children. President Clinton spoke about child labor and education in the U.S and Haiti, and said a film like "The Harvest" will bring awareness to an important subject. I had an opportunity to speak with Longoria who told me there are children as young as eight working the fields every day, and there are times when many are too tired to focus on schoolwork that most drop out before their sixteen birthday. Longoria informed me that these kids are BORN U.S citizens who are protected by our labor laws from working at McDonalds but not from working in the fields. The actress said in addition to working with politicians to change the laws, we can protect these kids by buying ORGANIC fruits and vegetables from our local supermarket or buy fruits and vegetables from farmers markets where children are not used. The film should be completed by the ending of this year, and I would like to encourage everyone to see it when it's released.
