2/2/08 Could Someone Please Tell The Greenwich Time That A Greenwich Resident Has Decided Not To Run Against Governor Rell

Blumenthal To Run Again As Attorney General

Hartford Courant

7:39 AM EST, February 2, 2009

By MARK PAZNIOKAS

Richard Blumenthal said today he is running for a sixth term as attorney general in 2010, ending the quadrennial speculation about whether he will run for governor. "We'll put out a statement later today," he said.

Blumenthal, who turns 63 on Feb. 13, has the highest name-recognition of the potential Democratic candidates, but he has never hungered for the governor's office. He has been stymied from running for the only office besides attorney general that interests him, a U.S. Senate seat, by Connecticut's two long-serving senators, Christopher J. Dodd and Jospeph I. Lieberman.

Blumenthal's decision leaves at least a three-way race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination -- with still others considering entering the contest.

James A. Amann of Milford, the former House speaker, formed a candidate committee in December and will announce his candidacy on Feb. 11. Stamford Mayor Dannel P. Malloy, who lost a close Democratic gubernatorial primary in 2006, and Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz say they intend to form exploratory committees soon......

.....Rell's job approval ratings remain high, but her biggest test is ahead -- how she and the Democratic legislative majority resolve the budget crisis. Her speech tonight is to prepare the state for the budget she will propose Wednesday.

Blumenthal Statement
Hartford Courant

Statement from Attorney General Richard Blumenthal:

I am pleased and proud to announce that I intend to seek reelection as Attorney General.I am as excited and enthusiastic as ever about the challenges and opportunities in this job. I will continue to fight for Connecticut's people -- fight against consumer fraud, environmental harm, child abuse and neglect, financial wrongdoing, waste and mismanagement in government, and other violations of law.

I look forward to working in collaboration with the new federal administration on historic, unprecedented tasks ahead -- restoring our economy and jobs, providing health care, reforming our financial regulatory system, and enabling effective law enforcement.

I look forward to continuing opportunities for public service in the future.

Conn. AG to seek another term, not governor's job
Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says he won't be among the Democratic candidates for governor in 2010.

Blumenthal announced Monday that he instead will seek re-election as attorney general, a job he's held since 1990 and longer than any of his predecessors.
Blumenthal says he remains committed to fighting consumer fraud, pollution, child abuse, financial wrongdoing and other illegal acts. Unlike other states, Connecticut's attorney general does not oversee prosecutions in criminal courts.

Democrats are lining up to run for governor. Former state House Speaker James Amann (AY'-man) and Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz (BYE'-suh-wits) are among the contenders.
Republican
Gov. M. Jodi Rell has not said whether she'll seek re-election.
