Take shelter, be patient and stay off the roads.
Those words of advice came from Joseph Siciliano, director of Parks and Recreation, one of a number of town department leaders and emergency officials who met this morning to prepare for Tropical Storm Hanna’s impending hurricane-like descent on the Greenwich area.
“There is also a good chance late morning through early afternoon that we will see partly cloudy, very humid conditions and rain and wind moving back into area around 6,” he said of Saturday’s weather.
The heaviest rain and wind is expected to be in the area, he added, from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, unleashing four to six inches of rain in the area, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast.
“This is all dependent on the storm track,” Mr. Warzoha said of Hanna’s anticipated weather, which may include inland wind speeds of 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
“We don’t anticipate this turning into a major flooding event at this time,” he added, saying that the flood threat is for urban areas and small streams.
Coastal wind speeds, Mr. Warzoha said, are expected to be about 40 mph, with gusts 50 mph and more.
By Sunday at 9 a.m., though, it’s expected to be “a beautiful, clear, sunny day,” Mr. Warzoha said.
The town’s Emergency Operations Center will be set up in the Town Hall Meeting Room tonight......

Himes blasts Shays over the economy

NORWALK - In front of a vacant East Avenue storefront Thursday, Democratic congressional contender Jim Himes slammed U. U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., for his recent declaration that "our economy is fundamentally strong. No one can disagree with that."
Shays made those comments in a Labor Day appearance on "The Brian Lehrer Show" on WNYC radio.
The economy has been a major campaign issue for Himes, who said he was shocked to hear the longtime Republican incumbent's appraisal of the current financial climate.
Himes addressed the remarks during a news conference at 214 East Ave., the former home of a family-owned florist that one of his campaign aides said went out of business two months ago after six years at the location.

Town should appreciate arts center efforts
To the editor:
I am writing in response to Staff Writer Neil Vigdor's Aug. 26 article about the Greenwich Center for the Arts' efforts to create a multi-arts center that would, in my estimation, bene-fit everyone in town and be a crowning jewel on Greenwich Avenue ("Town sees hurdles in arts center plan," Greenwich Time).
I would like everyone involved in this effort to please know that there are people out there (I am one) who really "get" what the group is trying to do, and appreciate the huge vision, the hard work and the unceasing hassle that are part of it. I applaud the five years of effort that they have contributed as volunteers to try to create something of which our town can be proud and that will help the many local arts groups in Greenwich to thrive as never before.
It is my personal hope as a citizen of Greenwich and as president of the Greenwich Art Society that our leaders and my neighbors will have the wisdom to accept GCA's incredible gift.
