Take shelter, be patient and stay off the roads.

Those words of advice came from Joseph Siciliano, director of Parks and Recreation, one of a number of town department leaders and emergency officials who met this morning to prepare for Tropical Storm Hanna’s impending hurricane-like descent on the Greenwich area.

Now Let's Here From Greenwich's

Real Emergency Manager

According to Daniel Warzoha, emergency operations management director, rains are expected to come to southwestern Connecticut between 2 and 8 a.m. tomorrow, producing one to two inches.

“There is also a good chance late morning through early afternoon that we will see partly cloudy, very humid conditions and rain and wind moving back into area around 6,” he said of Saturday’s weather.

The heaviest rain and wind is expected to be in the area, he added, from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, unleashing four to six inches of rain in the area, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast.

“This is all dependent on the storm track,” Mr. Warzoha said of Hanna’s anticipated weather, which may include inland wind speeds of 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

“We don’t anticipate this turning into a major flooding event at this time,” he added, saying that the flood threat is for urban areas and small streams.
Coastal wind speeds, Mr. Warzoha said, are expected to be about 40 mph, with gusts 50 mph and more.

By Sunday at 9 a.m., though, it’s expected to be “a beautiful, clear, sunny day,” Mr. Warzoha said.

The town’s Emergency Operations Center will be set up in the Town Hall Meeting Room tonight......

WAS A GREENWICH WOMAN KILLED OVER A FENCE DISPUTE?

Gerardo Lombardi, 75, was arraigned in Stamford Superior Court today on a charge of first degree murder, following the death of 49-year-old Alison McKnight Lombardi of Indian Pass, his daughter-in-law.

Mr. Lombardi was escorted by Greenwich officers to the courthouse for his 2:15 arraignment. Mr. Lombardi had no reaction to questions asked of him by media while being taken from the Greenwich police station.

Mr. Lombardi was arrested yesterday after police responded to a 10:47 a.m. 911 call reporting gunshots and a scream. Officers found Ms. Lombardi dead in the back yard of 36 Nicholas St. They determined she had been shot and stabbed.

Ms. Lombardi was the owner of 38 Nicholas St., where Mr. Lombardi lives, and 36 Nicholas St.....

...However, Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Paul Ferencek said “the defendent confessed to Greenwich detectives.”

As the case was presented to the judge, the clerk said Mr. Lombardi suffers from “multiple illnesses and disabilities.” He will receive a medical evaluation and be placed on suicide watch.

Mr. Lombardi has no violent criminal record.

Mr. Ferencek called the prosecution’s case strong, saying the woman was “cut down in her back yard.” He called it a “completely bizarre case.”

Mr. Lombardi was represented today by Public Defender Howard Ehring.

The Internal Revenue Service will hold a public auction of a Greenwich property on Sept. 26. IRS auctions are open to the public and are rare final steps taken to sell taxpayer assets to cover federal tax bills. Prior to the auction there will be three open houses of 7 Dwight Lane on Sept. 5, 6 and 25. Minimum bid will be $2.5 million.

MagicDance Toddler, a new two-hour-a-day, two-day-a-week creative arts program, will be hosting an open house on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon for parents or caregivers and children ages 1 1/2 to 2 1/2. The open house, held at the Garden Education Center in Cos Cob, will include an ongoing free class and a personal introduction to educator Audrey Appleby.

Jenny Lawton is still in. Arcadia Coffee Company, in name only, is out.

Ms. Lawton’s Old Greenwich coffee house, which first opened in the early 1990s, has been renovated and revamped following an ownership shake-up, and will re-open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 6.

Now known as Arcadia Café, the shop will continue to be owned by Ms. Lawton, who bought the store in 2004, but will be co-owned with business partners, Amy and Rob Guerrieri, owners of The Upper Crust Bagel Company and LexZee Gourmet and Catering, also in Old Greenwich. The new Arcadia boasts a new menu, paint scheme and event schedule. The store, on Arcadia Road in Old Greenwich, closed during August to accomodate its redesign.

“It will give a fresh look to the same thing,” Ms. Lawton told the Post today of the business’s redesign, “good food and a good community environment.”

Ms. Lawton who, until this year, owned both Arcadia Coffee Company and its neighbor, Just Books, told the Post in March that stressed economic times and other factors made her unable to subsidize the two stores the way she had been. When news broke that she was in trouble, Ms. Lawton said Riverside resident and frequent Arcadia customer Nick Barile of York Construction and Development put together a group of business people and potential investors to figure out how to save Ms. Lawton’s stores. Enter the Guerrieris....

...Just Books was sold to former Greenwich resident Marion Boucher Holmes in July. It also received a makeover since coming under new ownership, and will also re-open tomorrow.

More information about Arcadia and its offerings is available at 637-8766 or online at Arcadiacoffee.com.

Here is today's "Hedge Fund Guy Sucking Wind" story.....

Foreclosure Auction Set On Lauer's Greenwich Mansion

By Kenneth R. Gosselin at kgosselin@courant.com.

A former hedge fund manager's mansion in Greenwich is headed for an Internal Revenue Service foreclosure auction.

It's yet another problem for the owner, Michael Lauer.Six months ago, securities regulators and law enforcement officials indicted Lauer and four associates of the now-defunct Lancer Group of hedge funds, alleging that they defrauded investors of more than $200 million between 1999 and 2003.

If Lauer is still living in the 7,300-square-foot, contemporary estate at 7 Dwight Lane — and that couldn't be determined Thursday — he had better get ready for some visitors: The IRS is holding two open houses for bidders, today and Sept. 25.

The open houses could draw those curious to see how the other half lives in addition to possible bidders. But the scheduled Sept. 26 auction will require some serious cash: Bidding starts at $2.5 million.

...Real estate records show that Lauer, who once reportedly worked as a New York City cabby, bought the estate for $2.3 million in 1999.

Lauer's Lancer Group was linked to a scandal in 2003 involving the investment of state of Connecticut pension funds that lost millions in value....

UPDATE #2
7 Dwight Lane
Here's the house on Dwight Lane that's being sold via court judgment later this month. If you enlarge the first photo you'll notice that the house, built in 1986, has suffered from malign neglect. The original builder was on site and the auctioneer says that the man will "fix everything" for $100,000. Considering that that would involve, at a minimum, new siding, new decks, new electrical, new pool and God knows what else, that sum sounds suspiciously optimistic to me.
As did the auctioneer himself, who told me that his only problem was that he "only has one of these to sell". I questioned him on that and he assured me that $2.5 million was only going to be the starting bid and that he already had numerous buyers chomping at the bit. If he does, they almost certainly aren't from Greenwich because I can't believe anyone familiar with our town and this street's location would share the auctioneer's fevered enthusiasm.
Of course, he could have been shucking and jiving me - you think?
The grounds are nice, though. By the way, I forgot what else needs replacement: the tennis court.

NORWALK - In front of a vacant East Avenue storefront Thursday, Democratic congressional contender Jim Himes slammed U. U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., for his recent declaration that "our economy is fundamentally strong. No one can disagree with that."

Shays made those comments in a Labor Day appearance on "The Brian Lehrer Show" on WNYC radio.

The economy has been a major campaign issue for Himes, who said he was shocked to hear the longtime Republican incumbent's appraisal of the current financial climate.

Himes addressed the remarks during a news conference at 214 East Ave., the former home of a family-owned florist that one of his campaign aides said went out of business two months ago after six years at the location.

Town should appreciate arts center efforts

To the editor:

I am writing in response to Staff Writer Neil Vigdor's Aug. 26 article about the Greenwich Center for the Arts' efforts to create a multi-arts center that would, in my estimation, bene-fit everyone in town and be a crowning jewel on Greenwich Avenue ("Town sees hurdles in arts center plan," Greenwich Time).

I would like everyone involved in this effort to please know that there are people out there (I am one) who really "get" what the group is trying to do, and appreciate the huge vision, the hard work and the unceasing hassle that are part of it. I applaud the five years of effort that they have contributed as volunteers to try to create something of which our town can be proud and that will help the many local arts groups in Greenwich to thrive as never before.

It is my personal hope as a citizen of Greenwich and as president of the Greenwich Art Society that our leaders and my neighbors will have the wisdom to accept GCA's incredible gift.
