Chao, big labor disagree on bailout package

Journal News

GREENWICH, Conn. - The Bush administration's $700 billion plan to rescue troubled financial firms has placed the labor secretary in a familiar spot: at odds with big labor.

Secretary Elaine Chao said during an appearance at Greenwich Hospital yesterday that it is important for Congress to pass the bailout package "quickly and cleanly."

....Chao, Bush's longest-serving cabinet member, said. "We are increasingly interlocked with the rest of the world economy, so it's important that this package be passed quickly and cleanly."

Asked about the AFL-CIO's position that the package is "imbalanced" and puts working people last, Chao noted that not every troubled business has gotten a bailout.....

.....benefits have already been extended by 26 weeks once this year already. That's on top of the regular insurance benefits."

Disagreeing with organized labor is not new for Chao. Bill Samuel, the director of government affairs for the AFL-CIO, said the group has been disappointed with Chao on a number of issues, including raising the minimum wage, the level of funding for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and wage and hour matters.

"John Sweeney says she's the most anti-labor labor scretary he's seen," Samuel said

Today's Chemist At Work

By Philipp K. Janert. Manning Publications Co.: Greenwich, CT.

....“Famous scientific plotting package”: This succinct yet accurate description of gnuplot appears on its SourceForge project page. Despite being one of the most well-known open source scientific projects around, it has taken 15 years for the first book on gnuplot to be published. Gnuplot in Action by Philipp K. Janert will be published by Manning Publications in Jan 2009 (the first chapter is available free at http://www.manning.com/janert/). The fact that the name of the program starts with a lowercase letter should indicate that gnuplot is unlike most modern graphing packages. All plotting operations are controlled by commands entered at an interactive prompt. While this is one of gnuplot’s most powerful features, as it allows the user to automatically generate graphs using scripts, it also means that there is a steep learning curve....
