An abundant number of jellyfish have been reported recently at all Greenwich beach locations. Jellyfish appear worldwide and most varieties found in Connecticut waters are blue-red jellyfish, which can produce painful but not harmful stings. The jellyfish, including their tentacles, may be six to eight inches in diameter. Jellyfish stings are caused by the nematocysts (minute stinging cells of the animal) found in the tentacles. The stinging cells separated from the body can stick to the skin and continue to sting. Don’t touch the tentacles with your bare hands.
