Kids build Wiffle ball yard
Tim Bellantoni hit one over the Green Monster yesterday - well, sort of. Here, the locals don't pronounce it "mon-stah" the way they do in Beantown and the pitcher was wearing Vineyard Vines flip-flops instead of spikes.

Schools look for ways to improve
The practice of holding morning meetings was such a hit with one class of fifth-graders at Julian Curtiss School that it will be extended to other classes next year.

Tapes still not available
Surveillance video of an 18-year-old student being tasered by town police during an arrest six weeks ago at Greenwich High School has yet to be made available to attorneys in the case, the student's lawyer said yesterday.

In a step to speed up responses to blazes and find hard-to-reach water in backcountry areas, the fire department will soon install satellite technology on fire trucks to provide directions and show detailed maps showing hydrants, lakes, and other water sources within moments.

Town radio host signs off
A familiar voice who has helped bring listeners of WGCH-AM 1490 up to speed on the news of the day for the past two decades is about to sign off for the last time.

BANC roll: Byram upsets Eastern Rigging to reach Senior Babe Ruth finals
Mark Pelazza powered BANC with his bat last night, hitting a clutch three-run double and two-run triple.

News reports on recurring beach closings show that fixing sewer lines and treatment plants, and banning boat-sewage dumping in Long Island Sound, have not ended water pollution problems.

To the editor:

I was glad to hear about the new beach wheelchairs ("Wheelchair eases access to the beach," Greenwich Time, June 24). I used to enjoy the beach, but due to problems with post-polio syndrome, I can no longer walk without my braces.

As the head of the Southwest Regional Disability Advocacy Collaborative, it is nice to know that the town is trying to be more handicap friendly. I hope that there are appropriate signs at the beaches advising people that there are wheelchair beach chairs and where they are located.

Quite often there are services available for the disabled, but they are not widely publicized. People with disabilities are forced search for the information; consequently they often miss out on activities and events that other town residents enjoy.

For further information on our advocacy group, I can be contacted at pkana@snet.net.

Thank you for the information in the newspaper.

  1. Dear Carol,
It is very rare that townships and communities are that supportive, at least in most parts in Germany. I wish our public's concern would circle more around wheelchair users and opening up the everyday world to people with disabilities. What kind of beach wheelchairs are there at your place? Are they electric or manual?
Feel free to check out our electric off-road wheelchair cadWeazle and let me know what you think.

You have a great day Carol
