HEADLINE:

Greenwich Library Director Mario Gonzalez informed the Greenwich Library Board of Trustees of his decision to retire at a meeting on Tuesday night

The library staff was informed on Wednesday afternoon.

QUOTE:

"I think it is time," Greenwich Library Director Mario Gonzalez said. "It's been nine years. I've had a lot of accomplishments in my time here and it is time to consider other opportunities that will come to my door."

THE REAL STORY:

Bye, Bye, Mario

...the sigh of relief that has gone up from the library staff is clearly audible. Years of tyranny and mismanagement are now behind them, and while the library board has not been noted for its brilliant choices of directors since Nolan Lushington left, there is at least a fighting chance that the next director will not be as obnoxious and inept as Mario and his predecessor Beth Mainiero (whose deputy director also made off with tens of thousands of library dollars and was likewise convicted) have been.

And so, dear reader, bit by bit the Augean Stables in the Town of Greenwich are being cleansed. Whitby School has rid itself of the late unlamented Michele Monson; Greenwich Library has set Mario Gonzalez on the road of looking for "new opportunities"; and the unspeakable Betty Sternberg's contract is up next year. Maybe if she keeps her nose clean she, too, will have the chance to resign gracefully and "pursue other opportunities."

Or maybe the townspeople will simply tar and feather her and ride her out of Town on a rail. There was yet another demonstration at the Board of Ed headquarters yesterday - one would think that dear Betty might get the message. How many other towns, dear reader, have regular protest demonstrations outside their Boards of Ed? Can you name a single one?...

THE POLITICALLY CORRECT STORY

After nine years at the helm of Greenwich Library, Mario Gonzalez will retire this summer to pursue other opportunities, he said yesterday.

School And Scouts Agree To Work Together

To the Editor:

I was surprised to read the front-page headline in the May 7 Greenwich Time ("Scouts Take A New Route") as I feel it is quite misleading. Simply stated, the Boy Scouts did not withdraw our request for 2-3 minute in-class visitations or 5-10 minute lunchroom presentations. Rather we agreed to work within the only options offered to us, "before and after school" recruiting opportunities.

More accurately, the headline of the story could have been "Schools and Scouts Agree to Work Together to Get More Kids in Scouting." The meeting included an open discussion about the values of scouting programs and how they support the mission and values of the Greenwich Public Schools, and included research that clearly shows scouting programs help strengthen academic performance. All in attendance agreed.

The meeting also included a discussion of new recruiting ideas, such as after-school recruiting opportunities (at elementary and middle schools) with various exhibits and displays for students and parents, and the opportunity to set up a "model campsite" at the school on "recruiting" days to display tents, canoes, pioneering projects, etc., as well as the opportunity to establish a Venture Crew for boys and girls at Greenwich High School.

It was agreed by all that scouting holds an important place in the lives of our children, and that we would continue to work together to insure that every child has a chance to learn about the Scouting programs and is given every opportunity to join. Future meetings between representatives of the schools and scouting are planned, and will include the chairwoman of the Board of Education and the president of the Greenwich Council, BSA. Our focus will be on strategies to expose more children to the "core values" of our scouting programs: citizenship, compassion, cooperation, courage, faith, health and fitness, honesty, perseverance, positive attitudes, resourcefulness, respect and responsibility. These are values every parent wants for their child.

Although "before and after school" are not our most desired recruiting times, I assure you that we will "do our best" to present the magic of the scouting programs within these parameters.

Mike Robertson

Scout Executive

Greenwich Council, Boy Scouts of America

Police Watch: The following are today's released reports

DISORDERLY

A 27-year-old Stamford man was arrested May 16 and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. Police had been sent to the scene after receiving a 911 call about a woman screaming. Upon arriving at the scene, officers reportedly saw the man running away out of the home’s rear courtyards and was detained. According to reports, the victim told police that she had been trying to leave with her children to go to a friend’s house and the man became very angry and grabbed her cell phone from her and smashed it against the floor, breaking it into several pieces. When the woman tried to leave, the man allegedly then came up behind her and shoved her into the open rear car door face first, causing her lip to swell, and then put her in a headlock preventing her from breathing for several seconds. She told police the man threw her onto the ground and approached her apartment, causing the children to become scared and start to cry. The woman suffered minor injuries to her bottom lip, right shoulder and back but told police she didn’t want medical attention. The man was released on a $2,000 cash bond and was due in court May 16.
