Burns, first female federal judge in Connecticut, to retire

Judge Ellen Bree Burns, the first woman to serve on the federal bench in Connecticut, is retiring after 37 years of overseeing cases in U.S. District Court. The New Haven-born 1947 graduate of Yale Law School has overseen many high-profile criminal cases including those of Martin Frankel, the Greenwich financier who stole $200 million from insurance companies, and former state NAACP leader Ben Andrews, who was involved in the kickback schemes of convicted former state Treasurer Paul Silvester.
