Bootstrapping a career in real estate development

Forrest Development, talks about his construction and development business as he looks over plans for a house he is building in Greenwich, Conn., on Wednesday, February 18, 2015.Photo: Lindsay Perry When Jonathan Cohen decided to try his hand at property development -- with his own money on the line -- he recalls getting a cautionary word from none less than Clay Fowler , his boss and the developer who engineered deals to redevelop Stamford's sprawling Clairol factory into a new headquarters for NBC Sports and a massive athletic complex for Chelsea Piers. "I told what I wanted to do, and he was kind of like, `You're crazy,'" Cohen said.
