Liquor store density sparks debate

On a leisurely drive from one end of town to the other along Route 1, you can count nine liquor stores dotting the street. At times, they are spread far apart -- the distance between Horseneck Wine & Liquor at 25 E. Putnam Ave. in Riverside and Cos Cob Liquor in Cos Cob is 1.2 miles -- and at other times, they are close together -- it's a third of a mile between the new Balducci's spirit shop at 1050 E. Putnam Ave. and Greenwich Wine & Spirits at 1155 E. Putnam Ave. With 21 liquor shops on the rolls at the state Department of Consumer Protection, Greenwich has roughly the same saturation of wine and liquor shops as the state average, about 3.4 establishments per 10,000 residents.
