Stamford's Smith House nursing home struggles, while Greenwich flourishes

The two facilities -- separated by an 11-mile drive down the Merritt Parkway -- are both highly rated by healthcare regulators and serve patients who report satisfaction with the care they receive. But while Nathaniel Witherell in Greenwich enjoys stable finances and recently invested in a $27 million renovation, Smith House in Stamford struggles with longstanding, multi-million dollar deficits.
