10/23/11 Kay And John Terzis Letter About The Board of Education Elections

It was indeed sad and disappointing to read the Greenwich time opinion piece (Oct. 21) written by the former PTA Council presidents wherein they appear to be advocates for the former superintendent of schools instead of being ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN which is what the PTA is supposed to be.
Calling any Board member a dissenter simply because they insist that the superintendent fully inform them of any new program he wants to push through before it is fully laid out, such as the IB program, is NOT advocating for the children. As it turns out, the IB program had no support with teachers and parents.
Trying to ram a new idea through is like Nancy Pelosi insisting on passing Obamacare before we can find out what's in it.
What we need on the Board of Education are eight members with the fortitude to insist on being fully informed of new programs before voting. Then we may be able to avoid disasters like open space classrooms.
We strongly recommend voting for Marianna Ponns Cohen in the coming election and hope the rest of the elected Board follows her example.

10/23/11 Greenwich Resident Linda McMahon: Super Committee Consequences: Our Nation's Security and 40,000 Connecticut Jobs

Good Morning,

In just 30 days, a Super Committee of 12 men and women in Washington are required to produce a plan to cut spending for our country -- the job 535 members of Congress, including members of Connecticut’s delegation, have failed to do for years.

Like you, I know that Washington's runaway spending has led to staggering deficits that will create cascading economic and national security issues. At stake is the security of the American people; and for Connecticut, nearly 40,000 jobs could be on the line.

Please take a moment to read my op-ed in CTNewsJunkie.com. In it, I address the consequences of Congress handing over its responsibilities to the Super Committee, threatening our national security and our already fragile economy.

If you agree that Congress seems more focused on providing political cover for the professional politicians in Washington than for making the difficult decisions needed, then I ask you to forward this email to 10 of your friends and post your thoughts on my Facebook page.

Sincerely,

Linda

10/22/11 George Schiele's letter to Editor supporting Marianna Ponns Cohen's candidacy

To the Editor:

Having served on the RTM and other community and volunteer service positions, I have come to hold in special respect those who are willing to endure the slings and arrows that such service usually draws in order to do what is best for our Town.

This is particularly true for the Board of Education, whose members must balance the interests of taxpayers at large, parents and students, the schools bureaucracy, and the powerful professional unions.

Republican incumbent candidate for re-election to the Board this year -- Marianna Ponns Cohen -- has consistently and publicly advocated the policies necessary to ensure that all stakeholders' interests are protected in our public school system.

For example, the Board of Education has in recent years been unable to fill the position of Schools Superintendent successfully. It has taken courage and wisdom for Marianna (with at times the support of only one other Board member) to correct the Board's two most recent mistakes, at what was considerable personal cost to her in time, effort and peace of mind .

Greenwich spends generously to support the best programs and facilities. To ensure we get what we need and pay for, we must have a Board of Education whose members are willing to not just "go along to get along".

Our students, and the Town, need Marianna's continued presence and contributions on the Board. She is a worthy leader, and her re-election must be a community priority.

Please join me in voting to re-elect Marianna Ponns Cohen.

George Schiele
