Count on John “Zeke” Bella to light up a room.

When the lights cut out in the middle of his 80th birthday party at the St. Lawrence Society during a storm Sunday, the former Major League Baseball player kept exchanging hugs and handshakes like nothing had happened.

“Turn the lights back on Zeke!” one guest shouted jokingly.

“Zeke’s a wonderful guy,” said longtime friend Tom Harrington. “If we were having a picnic at Island Beach or something, everybody would be there, but the light would not shine on us until Zeke showed up.”

Dozens of friends and family members honored the octogenarian former baseball player and a lifelong town resident at the Cos Cob social club Sunday. Bella had a 52-game career with the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Athletics during the late 1950s.

Party guests weren’t the only ones tipping their hats to Bella Sunday. Yankees announcer Michael Kay gave Bella a birthday shout-out at the top of the second inning Sunday against the Seattle Mariners.

Hall-of-Fame manager Whitey Herzog called Bella on his daughter’s cell phone to wish him well during the party, while Hall-of-Fame manager Thomas Lasorda gave his congratulations in a pre-recorded video.

After graduating from GHS at age 16, Bella went on to Eastern Military Academy for a year before playing semipro ball in Hertford, N.C., and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He signed a contract with the New York Yankees in 1951 and played in the team’s farm system for several years.

After a three-year stint in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951-54, Bella returned to baseball in 1955. He was called up to the Yankees at the end of the 1957 season during the pennant drive. The Bronx Bombers won the American League title that season, but lost the World Series in seven games to the Milwaukee Braves.....
