No denying the ham-handed handling of the harbor master ...
By Lincoln Millstein
There was a reason why 150 mariners jammed the meeting room in Greenwich town hall on March 18. I was there to witness one of the most volatile public meetings in town in years.

If the meeting had been held at 7:30 p.m. instead of 5, there would have been 2X the number of people if not 3X. (If you want to guarantee a smaller audience in Greenwich, just make sure the commuters can’t make the meeting)

But the wont of the the so-called Coastal Resource Advisory Committee has been to keep this piece of public business out of public scrutiny. Why else would you stack the committee with members who resemble a Republican fund-raising dinner? Several of the committee members are from Greenwich yacht clubs, arguably the most secretive organizations in town.

Add to this the naming of Jonathan Asch, one of the most argumentative and divisive people around, to be the town’s new head master (whoops, I meant harbor master) and you’ve got the makings of a powder keg, which, predictably exploded in mid-March when boaters began receiving 300 percent increases in mooring fees with virtually no explanation. I urged my friend John Craine to tell Jon Asch not to act like he’s a foreman on a job site – one wag called Asch a hammer looking for a nail. John Craine is the chair of the coastal committee whom I called to get a personal explanation as to why my fees were going from $35 to $100 in one fell swoop. I’m not sure even to this day that I understand it. But I am certain that John failed to communicate it effectively that day in town hall in front of the 150 boaters.

Then Peter Tesei assured us all that nothing will be done this year and that the selectmen would delay enforcement of the new policies recommended by the committee. One week later, the new mooring fees went into effect. Huh?.....

NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS TO FILM FOLLOW-UP STORY
ON ROCKIN’ WATER AND THE “ROCKIN’ APPALACHIAN MOM PROJECT”
Second Time Rockin’ Water Founder Amy Guerrieri to be Profiled for Work in Appalachia

(Old Greenwich, Conn., October 29, 2009) – ROCKIN’ WATER™ is making a difference in kids’ lives. Not just with its great nutritional attributes of having 11 vitamins and minerals, 3 grams of fiber, and an antioxidant level equal to a serving of fruit, but with its work in one of the poorest areas of the United States, the Appalachian region of Martin County, Kentucky.

Amy Guerrieri, founder and CEO of ROCKIN’ WATER, created ROCKIN’ WATER with the goal of making a difference in kids’ lives and ROCKIN’ WATER is “made by Moms who love their kids™.” Last spring Amy was moved by a television segment she saw on the people of Appalachia and their many nutritional, financial and emotional struggles. Amy knew she had to do something to help these families – and this is why she had created ROCKIN’ WATER - to make a difference in kids’ lives. Amy jumped into action and traveled to Kentucky to see first-hand the extreme level of poverty in the area, then immediately founded a non-profit to help the families in Appalachia through R.A.M.P. – the Rockin’ Appalachian Mom Project.

ROCKIN’ WATER,
R.A.M.P. and Amy Guerrieri are striving to improve the nutritional well being of the children in Appalachia. For every bottle of ROCKIN’ WATER sold, ROCKIN’ WATER will donate two cents to R.A.M.P. R.A.M.P.’s efforts have been so impressive that NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams originally profiled the story in a “Making A Difference” segment in March. The story was one of the top-viewed online stories for two weeks following the airing. NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams will be going back to Kentucky with Amy and her “Mom Brigade” of volunteers again in November for a follow-up story.

Just this year, Amy has personally been to Kentucky three times bringing thousands of bottles of ROCKIN’ WATER, and generating truckloads of donated items including much needed school supplies, backpacks, diapers, children’s and adult clothing, furniture, beds and anything else that is needed. Amy has also been mentoring Moms in Martin County, Kentucky, the poorest county in the U.S., to help them with nutritional needs of their children, financial resources, and the well being of their family. In recent months, R.A.M.P. has been working one-on-one with the Moms and children, working on nutritional education with the families and the schools, and securing repairs for one family’s home that was in dire need of repair; their home is now livable and safe for their children.

When Amy returns to Kentucky on her next visit, she will be bringing with her a truckload of ROCKIN’ WATER, donated coats and winter outerwear for the children, and close to 100 kerosene heaters R.A.M.P. has raised funds for to help keep 100 families warm during the cold winter months. In addition, another full truckload of medical supplies and hospital equipment worth more than $75,000 will also be shipped to Kentucky. The medical equipment will fill two respite centers in Martin County, which will help families with loved ones that are elderly or have disabilities. R.A.M.P. was able to secure the medical supplies through the generosity of Amy Guerrieri’s childhood friend, Jim Ressler, co-founder of Medical Angels, which is a New Jersey based non-profit that helps get medical equipment to those in desperate need.

“When I saw the story on the poverty in Appalachia, I couldn’t believe that such bad circumstances were here in the United States,” said Amy Guerrieri. “I’m a Mom of four children and I thought it was important for kids to know that poverty existed here in the United States – it wasn’t something that was just in other countries. I wanted my children to know too that there was something that could be done to help, so through R.A.M.P., we are able to work community-to-community, family-to-family, Mom-to-Mom and kid-to-kid to really make a difference in their lives.” Amy is so committed to R.A.M.P. and its efforts in Martin County, Kentucky, that she has told the residents there that she “would be back.” And, she has kept her promise, returning to the area already four times in the past nine months. Amy plans on continuing her visits to Kentucky and mentoring the Moms there, working with the schools and the families on nutritional education and helping make a better life for the children of Appalachia.

“These kids are our future,” said Guerrieri. “Kid need to eat healthy so they can focus in school and grow up and have a better life.” One of the areas where R.A.M.P. hopes to make a difference is through the aspect of “paying it forward.” Each family R.A.M.P. helps is required to then help another family in the area. R.A.M.P.’s goal is to get a family to be self-sustaining and live a healthy life.

Margaret, one of the Moms Amy has been mentoring, lost her husband in February to a heart attack at the young age of 39. Margaret has four children and didn’t know where to turn. Without a job, a husband, and a limited education, Margaret thought her life was over. Then Amy and the Moms of R.A.M.P. showed up on her doorstep and helped guide Margaret and her family. Since that time, Margaret has lost 60 pounds, has changed the way she shops and cooks for her family, has gotten a job and has transformed her life.

If you would like to help R.A.M.P. and its efforts in Appalachia, visit www.rampamerica.org

Just Books welcomes celebrated pastry chef and food writer Julia Usher as she introduces her new book Cookie Swap: Creative Treats to Share Throughout the Year (Gibbs Smith; $19.99). Usher has designed extraordinary desserts for such magazines as Chocolatier, Better Homes and Gardens, Bon Appetit, and Modern Bride, and such books as Vera Wang on Weddings and For the Love of Food. Usher is a former contributing editor at Chocolatier magazine, a James Beard Foundation Journalism Awards finalist, and a director of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP).

Ever since sampling the dazzling pink daisy cookies at her first cookie swap, Julia Usher has been a lover of all things sweet. As a young child, Julia cultivated her budding cooking skills by riding the apron strings of her mom - an accomplished home baker who ran a tight kitchen. "Make it from scratch or don't make it at all" was her mother's favorite mantra. By the age of 12, while other kids were still tinkering with their Easy-Bake ovens, Julia was wowing friends and families with lavishly decorated yeast breads and multi-layer tortes. Julia was also known on occasion to whip up a very lifelike soap and mud frosting cake for her sometimes pesky little sister. In 1994, Julia decided to turn her passion into her profession by enrolling in the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts. She graduated valedictorian, receiving the coveted M.F.K. Fisher Prize for outstanding scholarship in 1996. One year later, Julia opened AzucArte, a boutique bakery widely lauded for its wedding cakes that tasted as wonderful as they looked.

Thankfully, there's a one-stop place to look to finally find the solution to your undergarment headaches: the December release of Jené Luciani's The Bra Book: The Fashion Formula to Finding the Perfect Bra!

This book is for the amazing female pioneers who shattered the glass ceiling --- a practical and inspiring guide to figuring out what's next. Boomer women have been trailblazers throughout their professional lives. Now that their careers are losing their edge and children leave the nest, these women are ready to do for retirement what they did for the working world. The first book from The Transition Network focuses on the unique needs of women as they explore new possibilities and redesign the old model of retirement.

Gail Rentsch is a founding member of The Transition Network. In 2000, she recalls being among some 20 other women gathered to help build an organization where women could share their concerns and aspirations as they moved from their primary careers to something else. Gail retired from her primary career in 2004, after 24 years as founder and president of a successful, New York City-based public relations agency with clients that included book publishers, authors, non-profit institutions and corporations. Gail is also the co-author of The Whole Horse Catalog, first published by Simon & Schuster in 1977. That book has gone through three revisions, multiple printings and remains in print today. It is Gail's hope that this new book will last nearly as long.

Just Books is pleased to welcome Marina Julia Neary, an award-winning historical essayist, multilingual arts & entertainment journalist, published poet, playwright, actress, dancer and choreographer, as she introduces her first novel Wynfield's Kingdom (Fireship Press, $29.95).

Welcome to 1830s Bermondsey, London's most notorious slum, a land of gang wars, freak shows and boxing matches. Dr. Grant, a disgraced physician, adopts Wynfield, a ten-year old thief savagely battered by the gang leader for insubordination. The boy grows up to be a slender, idealistic opium addict who worships Victor Hugo. By day he steals and resells guns from a weapons factory. By night he amuses filthy crowds with his adolescent girlfriend, a fragile witch with wolfish eyes. Their tragicomic idyll ends when Wynfield falls under the spell of an elusive benefactress and leaves his bohemian, semi-criminal circle to follow her to Westminster. There, in the company of blue-blooded outcasts, he learns the secret of his origin and the role he is destined to play in the history of England. Invoking the ghosts of English anarchists, Guy Fawkes and Oliver Cromwell, Wynfield enters the world's biggest tavern - the Parliament, where he meets the most ruthless boy gang in the world - the British aristocracy. Using the mixture of chemicals, satire and horror, Wynfield stages an unforgettable performance and subdues the ruling class - if only for one day.

There are too many other free web sources for Greenwich news to pay for theirs. 10/28/09 Greenwich Time Editors And Staffers Discuss How To Erect A Pay Wall At Its Website

Hearst Newspapers is pushing the Greenwich Time editors and staffers to come up with a way to charge their online readers.

Hearst newspaper insiders tell Greenwich Roundup that here is a big debate about "if" the Greenwich Time should should charge for online content.

The Greenwich Time is thinking of joining a small list of online newspapers that are already using some kind of pay wall or meter on their web sites.

The Greenwich Time is still trying to figuring out its plans, but many local observers expect the paper to adopt some kind of paid membership model.

The Greenwich Time editors are just as stupid as they look if they think that they are going to make a huge amount of money for its so-called "exclusive or premium" content.

Yet Hearst Newspaper insiders continue to tell Greenwich Roundup that Greenwich Time editors are continuing to study various payment systems.

One pay model being studied is a "metered" system.

How might the math might work for a metered Greenwich Time Website?

Hearst Newspapers would charge Greenwich residents who visited more than 10 or 15 times each month.

Greenwich Time Editors think that 10% or 15% of town readers might pay $7 to $8 a month.

The Editors also assumes that the new metered approach would put 15% - 20% of page views and 10% - 15% of ad revenue at risk.

Hearst Newspapers calculate that the most avid Greenwich Time readers are the ones who are going to pay, because they are the ones who most responsible for the greatest number of page views.

What the Greenwich Time editors don't realize is that their pay model will destroy their growth in traffic, ad inventory and their voice on the web. They will create a vacuum that bloggers and citizen journalists will quickly fill.

The risks and the unknowns have convinced much smarter newspaper editors not to try charging online readers.

In a recent survey 16.5% said they were likely to pay if newspapers started charging for web access.

While 65% of the respondents said they were "extremely" unlikely to pay.

You have got to had it to the Greenwich Time Editors, because they have found yet another way to piss off their readers.

The Greenwich Time Editors have also talked about charging by building a new sites with extra offerings such as video, databases and news story archives . The idea involves creating a new website for paying members only. The Website is tentatively called Greenwich Time Plus Or Greenwich Time Extra.

The Greenwich Time Editors think that this approach wont damage anything they have already created on the free side. The thought process is not to take the current Greenwich Time website and put a pay wall around it, but to build something new.

The new additional website would charge $49 for an annual membership or $8 by the month.

Hopefully traffic at the main, Greenwich Time free site would still continue to grow.

One last idea floated by the Greenwich Time Editors and staffers was to stay free but charge high school sports devotees for specialized content they can't find elsewhere. The Greenwich Time would offer extended Cardinal sports content to "Insiders" who would pay $7 - $8 a month.
