S.T.E.P. Focus Results May 2009


During the month of May 2009, the Greenwich Police Departmentfocused their efforts on enforcing the seatbelts laws here in Connecticut inconjunction with the Nationwide Click IT or Ticket campaign.


The Greenwich Police Department wrote 428 seatbelt citations duringthe month of May. The citations were written all across the Town, but thefocus of the Traffic Enforcement Unit was Sound Beach Ave. A pre-surveyconducted before the initiative showed a 78% compliance rate. The postsurvey, conducted today, showed a 95 % compliance rate of operatorswearing their seatbelts. The effort is considered a success.


During the month of May 2008 225 motor vehicle accidents were reported on Town roads. For the same period this year, only 177 accidentswere reported, which is a 21% decrease for the month of May.


The Traffic Enforcement Focus for the month of June 2009 will be redlight violations. A large number of crashes seem to be caused by driversdisobeying traffic control signals. Patrol officers and the TrafficEnforcement Unit will be concentrating their efforts all across Town toenforce signal lights. Violations carry a $124 fine.
