09/24/08 Greenwich Roundup Reader Continues Dialog: ok, you know your quotes....

To the Editor,

I can't address all your "freedom of speech" quotes because, although they are all true, you seem to missing THE POINT. Yes, we have freedom of speech. Yes, newpapers should take a higher road and attempt to write factual articles, instead of running headlines to increase sales. And certainly, if the The Stamford Advocate Moxley Murder story fell short, or wasn't addressed properly, I sympathize with the family.

However, "freedom of speech", even in it's broadest definition, has limits. There should be a certain level of ethical professionalisn and, in just 2 days I have seen none. What I have seen is biased and unsubstatiated opinions. I have seen "slanderous statements". Is that "freedom of speech"? Or is that some sort of back stabbing retaliation because these bloggers didn't agee with the Advocate's former Editor.

I didn't agree with him 90% of the time. So, I didn't buy that paper.

Why does Geenwich have so many newspapers and websites anyway? Is Greenwich better than Stamford, Darien, or New Canaan? Is it because it has the closest Tiffany Jewelry Store or do it's residents think their town has so much impotant news, God forbid someone misses knowing Paul Newman was seen buying a Subway #3? I think the town of Greenwich has its fair share of Fairfield County's self-centered assholes, along with the equally repulsive residents who feel they are "ENTITLED" to do as they please, regardless of who they step on or who gets in their way. Every town down here is the same.

And Joe Pisani doesn't even live in Geenwich. So, why this blog issue is even important....I have no idea.

Signed,
Me (again)

Comment:

The Moxley story did more than fall a little short please see:

The Greenwich Time did a poor job of covering the Martha Moxley Murder on on October. 30, 1975.

In the early eighties the Greenwich Time attempted to revive it's poor image in the early 1980s by hiring investigative journalist Len Levitt to look into the unsolved murder case.

Levitt's story, based on more than 100 interviews and 400 pages of police documents turned over on the order of the state's Freedom of Information Commission, remained unpublished for nearly a decade.

The story was finally published over several pages in 1991.

When Levitt appeared in an Editor & Publisher cover story bashing the newspapers for the long delay in publishing his work, Pisani refused to talk to him.

Joe "The Censor" Pisani is more than welcome to submit a post to defend his record and I guarantee you he wont be censored here.

Trust me you do not know Mr. Pisani as well as many of the bloggers in Greenwich know Mr. Pisani. I also have been burned by Mr. Pisani too.

And it is not just Bloggers in Greenwich that have been censored for criticizing decisions made while Joe "The Censor" Pisani was Editor And Chief.

When Chris Who Blogs On The Stamford Based Blog Station Stops was critical of the Stamford Advocate for not publishing the photos of some criminals that beat and robbed a man he was banned from commenting on the Stamford Advocate Website.

Please see:

O5/08/08 - Stamford Advocate / Yellowich Time Once Again Can't Take The Heat

For the record, Greenwich Bloggers have never had a history of reporting things like," Paul Newman was seen buying a Subway #3."

But, they have heavily criticized Joe Pisani for promoting and encouraging that type of nonsense at the Greenwich Time and now exporting that waste of newsprint and bandwidth to the Greenwich Post.

And the sad part of this is that Joe Pisani likes this kind of garbage reporting.

Out of all the reporters and columnists that have recently been shown the door at the Greenwich Time, Joe Pisani has only brought his former student Susie Costaregni to the Greenwich Post.

When Sarah Littman was fired there people were outraged.

No one was outraged when Susie Costaregni was fired at the Greenwich Time, In fact I really don't think anyone noticed.

Joe Pisani did not bring Sarah Littman to the Greenwich Post.

No, Joe Pisani brought former student Susie Costaregni and her non-reporting to the Greenwich Post.

You are right that Joe Pisani doesn't live in Greenwich, but he spends a great deal of time editorializing here in Greenwich.

Chao, big labor disagree on bailout package

Journal News

GREENWICH, Conn. - The Bush administration's $700 billion plan to rescue troubled financial firms has placed the labor secretary in a familiar spot: at odds with big labor.

Secretary Elaine Chao said during an appearance at Greenwich Hospital yesterday that it is important for Congress to pass the bailout package "quickly and cleanly."

....Chao, Bush's longest-serving cabinet member, said. "We are increasingly interlocked with the rest of the world economy, so it's important that this package be passed quickly and cleanly."

Asked about the AFL-CIO's position that the package is "imbalanced" and puts working people last, Chao noted that not every troubled business has gotten a bailout.....

.....benefits have already been extended by 26 weeks once this year already. That's on top of the regular insurance benefits."

Disagreeing with organized labor is not new for Chao. Bill Samuel, the director of government affairs for the AFL-CIO, said the group has been disappointed with Chao on a number of issues, including raising the minimum wage, the level of funding for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and wage and hour matters.

"John Sweeney says she's the most anti-labor labor scretary he's seen," Samuel said

Susie Costaregni Gossip Columnist At The Greenwich Post Missed This Celebrity News Story:

I was in Larchmont today covering a young women’s mentorship program sponsored by Judy Sheindlin, star of the court room show Judge Judy. She said she knows Jeanine Pirro, so I asked Sheindlin what she thought about Pirro’s own court show that debuted this week.

As a TV judge veteran, she also had some advice for Pirro.....

Some innocent ex-inmates are dismayed that former Westchester County D.A. Jeanine Pirro has a new career dispensing television justice.
Jeffrey Deskovic is still bothered by her refusal to reopen his case, and is leading a protest outside the CW network’s Manhattan studios today, calling for a boycott of her new show, “Judge Jeanine.”
Deskcovic was wrongfully convicted in 1990 of rape and murder. In 2006, DNA evidence freed him when her successor reopened the case. Pirro, did not prosecute him, but had refused to reopen it.
Reps for Pirro and the CW did not return calls for comment.
More Pirro controversies:

Her husband, Albert, was convicted of federal tax fraud in 2000.

She was investigated for hiring former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik to wiretap her husband’s boat when she thought he was unfaithful.

At the launch of her failed run for attorney general in 2006 she fumbled for missing pages from her speech.

09/24/08 More Reader Submitted Comments About Joe "The Censor" Pisani

The test of democracy is freedom of criticism

To the Editor:

While I found the "search for Joe Pisani's new blog" humorous, the letter which followed was nauseating. I think, to make those types of accusations publicly, in an anonymous way, is a horrendous display of what we don't need in journalism (online or otherwise)

These so-called blogs should be modified, and the writer should be forced to sign them with their full name. I don't know who "R.C" is, but if he wrote about me, my family, or my coworkers is such a viscous and deceitful way, I'd want to beat the living shit out of him.

Having said that, I admit I have made my share of disparaging remarks in these type forums and I wouldn't have, if I was forced to use my real name.

I don't always agree w/Joe Pisani's columns, but his writing doesn't effect me personally. From what I know about him, I think he lives a moral life and strongly abides by his religious values. To insinuate or make innuendoes about him, his family, or friends, is wrong.

There is no excuse for the insults written in that letter. There is no truth in any of it, either. Joe may or may not be perfect, but he is what he is. A pretty good guy.

signed, me

Comment:

There is an effort for Joe Pisani and those who benefited from his censorship of dissent to try and revise Greenwich history.
Many bloggers in town, like Greenwich Diva and Greenwich Gossip were victims of one sided reporting or censorship while Joe Pisani was editor of the Greenwich Time.
A newspaper editor that censors voices in the community is a nothing to be admired.
A people that have been censored and told that they don't count tend to strike back in a mean spirited way. Joe Pisani hurt a lot of feelings in this community by being the best friend a public official ever had.

A newspaper editor that sits on an investigative report about a murdered Greenwich girl, because he was afraid of rich and powerful people is not to be admired.
How do you think Martha Moxley's mother feels about Good Ole Joe's censorship helping her daughter's killer roam around free all of those years?

To many things were censored by Joe Pisani, because he did not want to take the heat for telling you what is really going on in Greenwich.

Even today Mr. Pissani's tradition of censorship is living on. Have you seen one picture of Frank Mazza's "NEW" 30 Million Dollar School Building That Leaks in the Greenwich Time?
The next four days Greenwich is going to get poured on a good amount of the water is going to damage even more of the building that Greenwich taxpayers work so hard to pay for.
But Greenwich Taxpayers that only read the Greenwich Time are in the dark about what is going on at Hamilton Avenue School.

Joe Pissiani Long History Of Censorship In Greenwich Was A Very Bad Thing For This Town.

The Greenwich Time's History Of Censorship Offends The Good Minded People Of Greenwich And All The Good Minded People Of The Earth.

We can never be sure that the opinion we are endeavoring to stifle is a false opinion; and if we were sure, stifling it would be an evil still. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

The fact is that censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion. ~Henry Steele Commager

The only valid censorship of ideas is the right of people not to listen. ~Tommy Smothers

Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime. ~Potter Stewart

The dirtiest book of all is the expurgated book. ~Walt Whitman

I am thankful for all the complaining I hear about our government because it means we have freedom of speech. ~Nancie J. Carmody

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

A free press can be good or bad, but, most certainly, without freedom a press will never be anything but bad. ~Albert Camus

Every burned book enlightens the world. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

The paper burns, but the words fly away. ~Akiba ben Joseph

If you don't have this freedom of the press, then all these little fellows are weaseling around and doing their monkey business and they never get caught. ~Harold R. Medina

I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it. ~Mae West

To limit the press is to insult a nation; to prohibit reading of certain books is to declare the inhabitants to be either fools or slaves. ~Claude-Adrien Helvétius

We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people. ~John F. Kennedy

If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all. ~Noam Chomsky

You can cage the singer but not the song. ~Harry Belafonte, in International Herald Tribune, 3 October 1988

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. ~Voltaire

Books won't stay banned. They won't burn. Ideas won't go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only weapon against bad ideas is better ideas. ~Alfred Whitney Griswold, New York Times, 24 February 1959

Chao tours hospital, touts bailout plan
At a visit to Greenwich Hospital Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao urged Congress to pass the proposed $700 billion bailout package "quickly and cleanly," in the face of the current financial crisis.

Stocks aren't the only thing being grounded by the current financial maelstrom. The number of commercial airline flights at Westchester County Airport have dropped more than a quarter since the beginning of the year, transportation officials said.

It's a good bet that the average homeowner facing mortgage troubles could not get a deal like the one the Bush administration wants.

To the editor:

I have been a Greenwich resident for the past 30 years, and as you can imagine have seen lots of changes here. Many of those, sad to say, are appalling - from the clear-cutting of the natural landscape to the sometimes illegal excavation of some of the wetlands. All in all, though, I have remained silent.

That is, of course, till this situation with the turkey at Tod's Point, and by that I mean the animal, not the woman who is complaining about it.

Many of us have grown to really care for this animal, and find her quite amusing. She is friendly, and those so-called pecks at people are just that. They're harmless little playful nibs.

It's a game for her, and I played like that with her for awhile till she got tired and went about her business. The only real aggression I would say was from some of the children, and adults, for that matter, whom I have seen throwing sand at her. What do you expect from the animal when you treat her like that?

We humans are not the only species on this planet. Let me remind everyone of that. Just because an animal may be inconvenient does not give anyone any right to have it removed. That turkey has just as much a right to live there and play as any of us do; that is her home.

The only crime that turkey has committed was to come to trust the people there and be friendly. Just think of her as a young child wanting attention. Would you remove a child from his or her home for acting the same way, or throw sand?

Stop the paranoia and nonsense. There is not much beauty left in the world. Lets not turn Tod's into something ugly. That land and its wildlife has been abused enough already!
