Greenwich woman avoids prison in food stamp fraud

A Greenwich woman avoided prison Tuesday when she pleaded guilty to stealing more than $25,000 in food stamps, after state investigators determined she was living with the father of her five children and ineligible for the state program. Byram resident Valarie Morales , 38, of St. Roch Avenue, pleaded guilty to a first-degree larceny charge at state Superior Court in Stamford and was given a five-year suspended sentence and five years of probation by Judge Richard Comerford , and agreed to pay back the state $12,500.

Sit Through Several Traffic Light Cycles at 4 A.M. = A Drunk Driving Charge

Sitting through several traffic light cycles shortly before 4 o'clock in the morning is sure to attract the attention of Greenwich Police - especially if they happen to behind you at the traffic light. That's apparently what happened early Sunday to one Greenwich motorist stopped at the intersection of East Elm and Mason streets in central Greenwich, according to a police report.

Parkway School secretary fighting dismissal after phone theft; larceny case postponed to 4/21

Video surveillance, a Chanel purse and a missing iPhone 6 found on the side of the road are the elements of a criminal case brought against a Greenwich Public Schools employee who is fighting her dismissal after a larceny charge was filed against her last week. The school administration, meanwhile, sent out a notice Monday about the exit of Christine Martineau from the school system.

Police launch crackdown on distracted driving

Municipalities that have received a federal grant to combat distracted driving: Bridgeport, Brookfield, Danbury, Derby, Greenwich, Milford, Monroe, Norwalk, Stamford, Stratford, Trumbull and Westport State and local police have launched a new crackdown on drivers who text or talk on their cellphones while driving. The last big crackdown was for three weeks in September, when more than 7,000 motorists received citations for using their phone while driving.

Woman Faces Larceny Charge Following Theft from Saks Fifth Avenue

A woman is facing a fifth-degree larceny charge in connection with the theft of a pricey blouse from the Saks Fifth Avenue store on Greenwich Avenue. The woman was identified by the store's asset protection staff as having "exited the store without paying for a white Akris Punto blouse," according to a Greenwich Police report.
