08/28/11 Greenwich Patch Video: Over the Banks: Byram, Glenville, Pemberwick, the Shoreline
Winds, Rain, High Tides Take Their Toll On Greenwich
Hurricane Irene left her mark throughout Greenwich which remains under a state of emergency.
The Byram River spilled over its banks, flooding the Glenville and Pemberwick neighborhoods of town. Along Caroline Place and Riverdale Avenue, the river swiftly flowed and flooded backyards and homes on Riverdale. Many residents in the area heeded police, and evacuated their homes.
Across the river in Pemberwick, streets were flooded with river waters surrounding homes including some on Den and Hollow Wood lanes.
Further up river, at The Mill, just behind the Glenville Volunteer Fire Department, the water falls continued to rage with storm runoff.
At the Arch Street ferry dock, Long Island Sound lapped against the town's Parks and Recreation building, flooded the ticket booth on the dock and began to encroach the parking lot of the Delamar hotel across the harbor.
Bruce Park was closed by late morning as town crews erected sawhorses and signs to prohibit traffic entering the park. Entry also was prohibited to Grass Island and surrounding roads leading into the waterfront Belle Haven neighborhood.
Byram Park was off-limits as well as the high tides flooded the parking lot with water coming up to the wall of the Byram Yacht and Boat Club.
And along South Water and Mill streets, the curious watched as boats docked on the Byram River at Catalano Brothers had risen to the level of the parking lot. The water swirled around the popular Sam's Place bar and restaurant just across the Mill Street bridge.
Many roads throughout town remain closed because of downed trees including Weaver Street, Glenville Road and Old Church Road.

08/28/11 Bridgeport mayor imposes 8 p.m. curfew as city works to address downtown-wide blackout
Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch says he is asking resident to cooperate to maintain order and keep residents safe.
The power was cut to Bridgeport's downtown and East Side areas shortly before noon Sunday because of flooding concerns at two substations. It is unclear how long the outage will last.
Low-lying areas throughout the city are experiencing flooding due to the combination of the storm surge from Tropical Storm Irene and an unusually high tide.
Two city shelters are housing 700 people. Officials are clearing downed trees from intersections and setting up portable stop signs at major intersections where traffic signals lost power.

08/28/11 CL&P Crews Have Started To Clear Downed Wires
The CL&P crews will NOT be shifting to power restoration until early tomorrow morning.
Many folks in Greenwich will most likely get their power turned on sometime in September.
The power company’s response teams are paired with town tree crews.
CL&P did not begin any work until 1 p.m., due to company and OSHA policies that do not allow workers on the job in winds above 35 miles per hour.
Currently 13,457 Greenwich customers were without power, up from just over 12,000 earlier this morning.
Town officials said Hurricane Irene knocked down 15 power poles in town.
That is being compared to 120 poles that were knocked during last year’s March nor’easter.

08/28/11 Half Of Greenwich Is In The Dark
Close to 13, 000 Greenwich residents, or about 50 percent of Connecticut Light and Power customers are without electricity.
The town is waiting on the utility to send out line crews, while safety guidelines prevent them from putting workers in a bucket truck with winds over 35 miles per hour, and winds are picking up.
Greenwich Roundup will post more news as it becomes available from the Town of Greenwich and other sources..
