MaryArtemis has left a new comment on your post "06/18/10 HOW NEWS GETS REPORTED IN GREENWICH...":

Too much to say, here. I can't get past the Greek name. I have one also, am Greek Orthodox and feel strongly about this. Where does this guy get his Spiritualism from? God has NOTHING to do with this!

Moreover, I am jumping on the bandwagon and accusing the newspaper reporters of a lack of thought, ingenuity, initiative, motivation, proper understanding of their job. . . . . .up to the national and world level.

Let's get journalistic minds who care about the job, the people, and not getting off work early or even their salaries.

ANNUAL SWIM MAKES WAVES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

WHO: Founded in 1987 by Connecticut natives Matt Vossler and his lifelong friend and

Boston College roommate, Jeff Keith, Swim Across America was the first swim in the area dedicated to raising funds for cancer research. Now, 24 years later, Swim Across America is a national organization that rallies fundraising efforts for cancer research, prevention and treatment through open-water and pool swim events in cities such as Greenwich, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Nashville, New York, Providence, San Francisco, Seattle and other areas.

WHAT: The Greenwich-Stamford Swim Across America swim takes place on Saturday, June 26, 2010, and will include several swimming options: a 1.5-mile course, a ½-mile course, a challenging 5-mile course, or a pool swim. Those swimming the most popular 1.5 mile course will start at the beach at Greenwich (Tod's) Point with participants swimming along the shore of Long Island Sound to Dolphin Cove in Stamford, Conn. The 1/2-mile swim leaves from the Rocky Point Club in Old Greenwich, and the five-mile swim starts and returns from the Stamford shores at the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), the beneficiary of this year's swim, and the nation's only non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to funding cancer gene therapy research. Participants must register at www.swimacrossamerica.org by clicking on the Greenwich - Stamford Swim link.

In the past three years, Swim Across America's Greenwich/Stamford Swim has raised close to $700,000 for the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT) Young Investigator Award Grant program for treating brain cancer. The lead researcher and three year grant recipient on the project is Dr. Khalid Shah, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Shah is instrumental in exploring gene therapy alternatives for the treatment of brain tumors. With so much attention in the news about brain cancer recently, his work takes on a special urgency and there is great optimism that gene therapy will soon revolutionize treatment.

"One hundred percent of funds raised this year by the Greenwich - Stamford Swim will be donated to ACGT," noted Matt Vossler, chairman of the board of Swim Across America and a Darien, Conn., resident. "Due to the incredible generosity key donors and sponsors, we can say that every penny donated to Swim Across America will bring us that much closer to a cure." Vossler went on to note that 2010 is Swim Across America's 24th year of raising funds for cancer research and the events have grown to hold dozens of swims all over the country, each with its own distinct personality. "You can swim under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, or swim with NESCAC conference swimmers at Nantasket Beach, or even with Olympians in Greenwich and Boston Harbor," said Vossler. "Swim Across America began as a grassroots organization with events developing organically. Now, those events each raise hundreds of thousands of dollars; money raised is given to local beneficiaries, which happen to be some of the best in the world. Now, we are bringing Swim Across America events to the whole country, from coast to coast."

"It means a tremendous amount to Swim Across America to support the innovative and promising grants that the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT) funds with leading cancer researchers," said Janel Jorgensen, executive director of Swim Across America and a former Olympic swimmer and Silver Medalist. Jorgensen grew up in Ridgefield, Conn., and spent her summers swimming in the water of Long Island Sound near Greenwich and Stamford. Jorgensen, like many of the participants, also has a personal connection to wanting to help find a cure for cancer, as she has had family members affected by the disease. "The clock is ticking to find a cure for cancer and for Swim Across America to be able to support an organization like ACGT, that is on the leading edge of finding a cure, is exciting."

Returning this year as honorary co-chairs for the Greenwich/Stamford Swim are Olympic swimming champion Donna de Varona and husband John Pinto, Cindy and John Sites, Rueben and Arlene Marks, and Jonathan Sackler, all of Greenwich.

At age 13, Donna de Varona was a world record holder in the 400 Individual Medley and the youngest member of the 1960 Olympic Games U.S. Swimming Team, which competed in Rome, Italy. During her career, de Varona set 18 world's fastest times, and in 1964, she returned to the Olympics to capture two gold medals during the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Voted the most outstanding female athlete in the world in 1964, de Varona is undeniably one of the most decorated swimmers of her generation. She is an Emmy award winning sports broadcaster and is currently President of DAMAR Productions, a company specializing in sport documentaries, promos, event development and promotion. Donna's older brother David de Varona, is a cancer survivor, and she is devoted to the Swim Across America cancer campaign.

Swimmers from previous years included many recreational swimmers and several Olympic swimmers. In addition, a large contingent of swimmers were cancer survivors or those currently battling cancer, such as Old Greenwich resident and triathlete Karen Newman, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer; Nick Fernandez who swam with five of his family members who swam for Nick who has been treated for leukemia; and Roberta Bass, 58, of Greenwich, who in 2006 grappled with uterine cancer. Other swimmers are inspirations to everyone, such as Caroline Conrod of Greenwich, who at age seven in 2008, was the event's youngest participant; and Swim Across America co-founder Matt Vossler of Darien who lost a family member to the disease.

Swim Across America has raised more than $30 million for some of the top cancer institutions in the country, including Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, UCSF Children's Hospital, the Loyola Cancer Center, and the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT). With the help of hundreds of volunteers nationwide and many past and current Olympians, Swim Across America is helping find a cure for cancer through athleticism, community outreach and direct service.

The Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT) is the recipient of funds raised by Swim Across America. ACGT was founded by Greenwich residents Barbara and Edward Netter. ACGT believes that cancer gene therapy has the greatest potential to not only improve the quality of life of cancer patients, but to ultimately realize a cure for cancer.

The June 26 Greenwich - Stamford Swim Across America event will take place on Saturday, June 26. Each participant is required to raise a minimum of $500. Volunteer opportunities for boaters, kayakers and land volunteers are also available. For more information, visit www.swimacrossamerica.org or email Jacque Lang at Jacque@swimacrossamerica.org. Sponsors of this year's swim include: The Delamar Hotel, Westy's Storage Centers, The Vitamin Shoppe, Educational Warehouse, Chobani Yogurt, Poland Spring and Adina Beverages.

06/18/10 Greenwich Resident Michael Metter's Spongetech And The Infamous Universal Express Are Linked

Business Talk Radio Network Owner Michael Metter Is Once Again In The News

Spongetech and Universal Express link emerges
Crain's New York Business

The penny-stock fraud case involving Spongetech Delivery Systems and its chief executive, Michael Metter, looks to be the biggest case of its kind involving a New York-based company in many years. It also turns out the case has something in common with another infamous fraud, Universal Express.

Spongetech was a maker of SpongeBob SquarePants sponges; prosecutors last month charged Mr. Metter with conspiracy to commit fraud and obstructing justice. The government alleges that no fewer than 99% of the purported sales at Mr. Metter's company were phony, while he made millions from selling shares at inflated prices. In addition, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed civil fraud charges against Mr. Metter and some associates. Here's a story about Mr. Metter and his background. (subscription required)

This case is potentially the most engaging stock fraud in the city since the SEC cracked down in 2007 on a tiny and truly bizarre New York-based company called Universal Express. Universal Express was a luggage delivery outfit whose management team seems to have devoted relatively few resources to shipping suitcases and a lot of time to selling billions of near-worthless shares, issuing blizzards of press releases and blaming short-sellers for their woes. When a federal judge ordered CEO Richard Altomare to cough up $1.7 million in penalties, Mr. Altomare refused to pay and continued selling Universal Express shares in violation of the court order. The fed-up judge eventually sent Mr. Altomare to prison.

Until now, Spongetech and Universal Express seemed to have little in common except for the fact that both were advertisers at Mets, Knicks and Rangers games.

But last week, the two companies were linked more closely when one of the folks ensnared in the SEC's Spongetech case cited Universal Express to help make his argument on why a federal judge should deny the agency's request for a preliminary injunction and asset freeze.

The defendant is a lawyer named Jack Halperin, who the SEC alleges contributed to the Spongetech fraud by issuing "false and baseless" opinion letters that enabled Mr. Metter and associates to distribute worthless shares to gullible investors.

It's the SEC's claims that are baseless, Mr. Halperin argued in his filing. In order to prove fraud, the SEC must establish "scienter" or recklessness amounting to scienter, Mr. Halperin's attorneys wrote, citing the SEC's case against Universal Express. Scienter, Mr. Halperin's lawyers helpfully explain, means "a mental state embracing intent to deceive, manipulate or defraud" investors. Mr. Halperin, a lawyer with 38 years of experience, described himself as an "unwitting victim" of the Spongetech scheme who provided good-faith legal services at his ordinary hourly rate.

06/18/10 Conservative Leader And Political Commentator Star Parker Endorses Rick Torres

Star Parker has endorsed the Rick Torres candidacy for the congressional seat that Greenwich resident Jim Himes holds.

Star Parker is a nationally recognized Conservative leader, political commentator, and author.

Rick Torres Says ....

"Star and I have a shared background and a common message. We both suffered under the welfare state and with hard work and some luck both of us were able to join the free and prosperous economy that most Americans take for granted. Like me, Star understands that capitalism creates wealth and that government destroys wealth. Wealth grows the economy and creates jobs, a concept lost on Jim Himes and Nancy Pelosi. "

Rick Torres Continues ...,

"I am running for Congress to demonstrate that authentic American conservatism is the truest form of 'social-justice.' For too long my native Bridgeport has been held in bondage to the socialist experiments of the Democratic Party. As a Congressman I will work to end schemes of wealth redistribution and liberate my city of Bridgeport from the clutches of the Democratic Machine. With Star Parker's endorsement I am all the more confident that I will beat Jim Himes and that I will have a chance to serve the people of Connecticut. "

Rick Torres has made a lot of progress in a short period of time, but his campaign still needs contributions and financial help to restore the first principles of this exceptional nation.

06/18/10 Dan Debicella for Congress: Please Contribute If You Are Unhappy With Washington

Friends,

If you have opened this e-mail, you are dissatisfied with Washington DC and the policies of Jim Himes and Nancy Pelosi. I need your help with a donation by June 30th to get our country moving in the right direction-- whether in creating jobs, eliminating our unsustainable deficit, or improving quality of life for Fairfield County families.

Why June 30th? Because the national GOP has made us one of forty "targeted races" nationwide. The national GOP will give us significant financial resources in the Fall if we continue to meet their goals for fundraising.

We need to raise another $50,000 by June 30th to reach our quarterly goal. Would you be willing to make a donation? Any amount helps us-- from $50 donations all the way to $2,400. If everyone receiving this e-mail would make a first or second donation to the campaign, we will reach out goal.

You donate online or by personal check:

Online: http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=15611551&msgid=56916&act=KDA6&c=715693&destination=https%3A%2F%2Fdebicella.blue-swarm.com%2Fdonate%2F

Personal Check:
Debicella for Congress
PO Box 189
Shelton, CT 06484

Doing nothing with this e-mail will only help Jim Himes-- and help Nancy Pelosi become Speaker of the House again. So many of you have been so generous with the campaign already, but we need your continued support to remain a targeted race by the national GOP.

Together, we will get our nation moving in the right direction again.

All my best,

--Dan

06/18/10 More On The Senior Citizen Center Scandal That First Selectman Peter Tesei Turns A Blind Eye To.....

Dirty Work at the Senior Center, Continued

One of the best meals long-time chef Marva Savariau used to make at the Senior Center was her roast turkey luncheon. She was scheduled to serve it again this past Monday, but, as we all now know, she was rudely and summarily fired the Friday before. What actually happened at Monday lunch is an interesting object lesson in how quickly and how far things have suddenly spiraled downhill at the Senior Center.

Instead of the real bird fresh out of the oven, fit for a Thanksgiving table and carved in front of your eyes—"Would you like a drumstick? White meat? Dark meat? Some of each?"—it was a tasteless commercial deli loaf fed into a slicer. A few thin slices, topped with smarmy white gravy out of a can instead of the rich brown giblet gravy Marva used to prepare—that was what you got. And the desserts, instead of being the usual homemade pies and cakes and bread puddings, were either a tiny serving of jello with a little Redi-Whip on top, or six pieces of uninspired canned fruit. It was a mockery of what Marva had planned for Monday’s lunch, and she would have died of shame before she would ever have served such unspeakable slop to her beloved seniors.

But that is the way of the future, dear reader. Pay more, get less, and shut up. The way things are going in this Town, the seniors are lucky to get anything at all. And next year…who knows? If the commercial food service isn’t making enough profit on their chintzy meals, they may just bail, and leave the seniors foodless. Why should Morrison Senior "Living" care? They will have milked their ill-gotten contract for all it was worth, and then moved on to do the same thing to some other unsuspecting town up the line. It’s the American way, after all. Get what you can before the truth catches up to you, and then set up shop somewhere else. It’s just like the Duke and the King in Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. There’s always a bunch of greater fools two towns over.

Meanwhile, dear reader, we here in Greenwich are at present the greater fools. We took an operation that wasn’t broke, and was actually working very well, and we “fixed” it. Your tax dollars at work, dear citizen. We screwed ourselves, not to mention a faithful long-time Town employee, are enriching a greedy outside corporation, and will eventually be left holding the bag. Gee. We should be really proud of ourselves. Isn’t Greenwich great?
