Sex offender who opposed child safety ordinance heads to trial - TOPIX GREENWICH

A town sex offender who spoke out vehemently against banning sex offenders from loitering near schools and playgrounds will face trial Tuesday for failing to comply with the conditions of his release.

Ernest Drupals, 38, of 29 Carrona Drive, was charged in February 2008 with violation of his probation as a sex offender by Stamford police. Police said Drupals moved from Stamford to Greenwich without notifying authorities of his change of address.

Under state law, registered sex offenders face a Class D felony charge if they fail to comply with any registration requirements, which includes notifying Connecticut State Police in writing within five days of when they move or change their names....

....Drupals attorney, Mickey Sherman, was not available for comment Monday.

However, Sherman previously stated that Drupals had been diligent in following the law and did not believe his client ever violated the conditions of his release.

After pleading not guilty last year, Drupals elected to have a judge hear his case. Law enforcement officers are expected to testify at the court trial, which is only expected to last a few hours.

Drupals could face a maximum sentence of 5 years and a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted.

Lavery, Tesei at odds over elderly tax deferral plan - TOPIX GREENWICH
A little over a month before the first selectman's race is decided, Republican incumbent Peter Tesei and Democratic challenger Lin Lavery are clashing over a proposal to allow low- and middle-income seniors to put off paying their property taxes until after they die or sell their home.

Lavery, a selectman who came into office two years ago at the same time as Tesei, accused her opponent Monday of trying to railroad the plan through before the Nov. 3 municipal election to score points with elderly voters.

"I clearly feel this is political," Lavery said in an interview with Greenwich Time. "I feel you're trying to placate the seniors who were not happy that the (existing) elderly tax relief program was not fully funded...."

09/28/09 Tell The Greenwich Time What You Think Of This Story At The Topix Message Board

Police respond to 'UFO' sighting - TOPIX GREENWICH

It wasn't a bird, a plane or Superman, but residents of downtown Greenwich thought a myriad of lights in the sky just may have been an unidentified flying object passing overhead Saturday night.

The bright, moving lights in the sky caused several people to call police to report a possible UFO sighting. Some reports indicated there had been 30 to 40 individual lights glowing in the night sky.

The questions prompted police to send two marine officers to investigate the sighting.

09/28/09 Greenwich Roundup Invites You To Comment On This Greenwich Time Story At Topix: "Freund wants community poll on schools"

Freund wants community poll on school - TOPIX GREENWICH

Parents, teachers, students and community leaders would not have to wait until 2011 or later to make their opinions about the school system known to administrators, under a proposal being pushed by the superintendent.

Schools chief Sidney Freund wants the Harris Interactive School Poll administered later in the 2009-10 school year. The community satisfaction survey has been given every two years since 2006.

The Board of Education cut funding for the survey earlier this year to save about $38,000 in a 2009-10 budget that had to be trimmed by $4 million to help counter a town-wide revenue shortfall....

09/28/09 Comment About the psychic charged with lying about Greenwich Avenue attack at Topix

Psychic charged with lying about Greenwich Avenue attack - TOPIX GREENWICH

Despite her intuitive powers, psychic Janet Lee probably did not see an arrest in her future, especially just weeks after alleging she was the victim of an assault outside her store on Greenwich Avenue.

However, the self proclaimed "foremost psychic in New England" was arrested by Greenwich police over the weekend after detectives said she lied about being attacked in town by rival psychics in over the summer.

Lee, 35, of 143 Wolfpit Ave., Norwalk, was charged Saturday with falsely reporting an incident, interfering with an officer and providing a false statement after turning herself into police on an arrest warrant....

09/28/09 MTA Backing Down on Free Use of Train Schedules, Letters

Last month we noticed a guy who'd created an iPhone app for Metro-North schedules was embroiled in a copyright/fair use dispute with the MTA. The Authority wanted big bucks to provide him with information he was loading more efficiently himself. Now Chris Schoenfeld, creator of StationStops, seems off the hook -- as may be other developers who want to put train info on your phone.

The New York Times says "a longstanding fight against a Greenwich, Conn., commuter, who created an application with Metro-North Railroad schedules, suddenly ended with no money changing hands." And though his blog doesn't mention it, Schoenfeld's Twitter feed announced on the 22nd, "ITS OVER! CONGRATULATIONS TO MTA FOR PEACEFULLY ENDING THEIR LEGAL BATTLE WITH STATIONSTOPS!"...

The fees MTA had been demanding of another man who made an LIRR schedule app are being withdrawn, too. MTA says it's just "trying to evolve," but the Times suggests "pressure from politicians and technology advocates" were at play. Other cities have cooperated with developers on similar apps, and in June Mayor Bloomberg started a contest, inviting techies to put public city data into software applications. (Maybe soon you'll be able to download David Yassky's "It's Your Money" info to your phone, so the next time you're outraged by a city agency you can see how much money they got to serve you so poorly.)

Try as we might, we can't find a downside to this trend. It's even got Schoenfeld and San Francisco's Joe Moore -- who was battling New York's MTA, which apparently thought it owned all colored dots with letters in them, over the right to twit his local system with t-shirt logos like "L-ate," and won -- blogging about things besides their legal struggles, like a coffee machine in Schoenfeld's case, and business team best practices in Moore's. Well, okay, maybe it's not all good.

09/28/09 Greenwich couple may help fund needed Stonington animal shelter repairs

Stonington - The town is looking at renovating and expanding the aging animal control facility and a Greenwich couple, who have a home here, have indicated they may help pay for the work.

First Selectman Ed Haberek said Sunday that the anonymous couple have been in discussions with Police Chief J. Darren Stewart about the work, and have hired their own contractor to look at what work needs to be done and how much it would cost.

Haberek said a resident recently asked him to look at the facility, which is located at the landfill on Greenhaven Road, because she was concerned about the deteriorating condition of the building.

The Ant & The Grasshopper

Sad but True analogy

This one is a little different....
Two Different Versions! .................
Two Different Morals!

OLD VERSION
: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant i s warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
Be responsible for yourself

MODERN VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC
show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be
, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog
appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green
.'

Acorn
stages a demonstration in front of the ant 's house where the news stations film the group singing, 'We shall overcome.' Rev. Jeremiah Wright then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid
exclaim i n an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ants food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he d oesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY
:
Be careful how you vote in 2010.
