TOWN OF GREENWICH AND BOARD OF EDUCATION HOST GOVERNOR M. JODI RELL FOR BILL SIGNING AT HAMILTON AVENUE SCHOOL

Greenwich, CT: For Immediate Release – Thursday, July 16, 2009

The Town of Greenwich and the Greenwich Public Schools hosted Governor M. Jodi Rell at Hamilton Avenue School in Greenwich today for the signing of Public Act 09-155: An Act Concerning the Use of Asthmatic Inhalers and Epinephrine Auto-Injectors While at School. For children diagnosed with asthma or allergies, this act allows them to carry an inhaler or epinephrine auto-injector with them in school provided they have authorization from their health care provider who has prescribed a specific medication. Senator L. Scott Frantz, representing the 36th District communities of Greenwich, Stamford and New Canaan, is a co-sponsor of this bill.

First Selectman, Peter J. Tesei, said, “The Town of Greenwich is honored to have had the opportunity to host the Governor for the signing of this bill into law. This legislation will provide an increased level of safety related to health issues as well as greater peace of mind for the children afflicted with asthma or allergies, their parents, and school personnel – knowing that access to necessary medication is at arms length and saving valuable time in the event of a reaction while at school.”

Board of Education Chairman, Nancy Weissler, noted, “The safety and security of our students and staff are of the highest priority for us. This bill takes further steps to ensure that students with asthma or allergies have the care they need in a most timely manner in the event that medication is necessary. We were pleased to be able to host the Governor at our new Hamilton Avenue School as she signed this bill into law.”

Public Act 09-155 will be in effect August 15, 2009.

OLD GREENWICH – July 10, 2009 -- Greenwich residents will gather on Tuesday, July 21 for a “roast and toast” to Greenwich Citizen founding editor Don Harrison at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich at 4 Horseneck Lane from 6:30 - 9 p.m. During his seven years as the Citizen’s editor, Harrison built the town weekly into a highly regarded 15,000+ circulation newspaper that won four New England Press Association (NEPA) awards, including one for general excellence.

Longtime Citizen reader Jean-Louis Gerin of Restaurant Jean-Louis and his staff will serve guests a light dinner at the event. The Citizen’s “On the Wine Road” columnist, Francois Steichen, will be on hand to pour wine he has chosen for the evening.

Citizen readers who will roast Harrison during the evening include: First Selectman Peter Tesei; selectman Lin Lavery; State Rep. Fred Camillo, R-151; Comedian Jane Condon; Greenwich Chamber of Commerce CEO/President Mary Ann Morrison; “Eyewitness News” founder and television news executive Al Primo; Greenwich Hospital vice president George Pawlush; Citizen founding reporter Pat McCormack; Greenwich High School football coach Rich Albonizio; and Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich executive director Bob DeAngelo.

Providing a blessing for the evening will be two of the longtime rotating writers for the Citizen’s Perspective column, Msgr. Frank Wissel, pastor at St. Mary Church, and Rabbi Mitch Hurvitz of Temple Sholom. The Rev. Kenneth Kieffer, the now-former pastor of First United Methodist Church in Greenwich, had hoped to attend but will be out of state.

Proceeds from the event’s “roast and toast” will support a program close to Harrison’s heart: the Boys & Girls Club’s athletic program. “Don Harrison truly understood the word ‘community’ and all that it means,” said Bob DeAngelo, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. “He was fun and very professional to work with, and we appreciated his help and energy to profile our mission of helping children at the Boys & Girls Club. Since Don Harrison is a great baseball fan, we will put the generous proceeds of the night toward our athletic/ baseball programming.”

Tickets for the event are $35 per person, and reservations are required. To make a reservation, call Stephanie Paulmeno at 344-9333 or email harrisonroast@optonline.net.

Citizen founding reporter McCormack earned a Best News Story award in 2003 from the Connecticut Press Club for her page 1 piece on the pastor of St. Paul’s R.C. Church being forced to resign for alleged sexual misconduct. Reporter Christopher Falvo won a 2005

NEPA award for his series on his participation in the Greenwich Citizens Police Academy. Harrison captured a NEPA award as Best Serious Columnist in 2004 and first place for Best Editorial in the 2005 contest.

She was the editor in chief of both McCall's and Lifetime, was an editor at Mademoiselle and Woman's Day, and has taught creative writing at the Writing Institute of Sarah Lawrence College. In her new novel, The Late, Lamented Molly Marx (Ballantine Books, $25), Sally Koslow explores the bonds of fidelity, family, and friendship, through the narration of a memorable and endearing character, Molly Marx. Molly dies of mysteries circumstances while riding her bike in New York City. The book is a hilarious, deeply moving, and thought-provoking novel that is part mystery, part love story, and all heart. The circumstances of Molly Marx's death may be suspicious, but she hasn't lost her joie de vivre. Newly arrived in the hereafter, aka the Duration, Molly, thirty-five years old, is delighted to discover that she can still keep tabs on those she left behind: Annabel, her beloved four-year-old daughter; Lucy, her combustible twin sister; Kitty, her piece-of-work mother-in-law; Brie, her beautiful and steadfast best friend; and, of course, her husband, Barry, a plastic surgeon with more than a professional interest in many of his female patients. As a bonus, Molly quickly realizes that the afterlife comes with a finely tuned bullshit detector. Sally Koslow is the mother of two sons and lives in New York City with her husband.

KATE WALBERT
A SHORT HISTORY OF WOMEN
A short History of Women
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Just Books is pleased to welcome award-winning author Kate Walbert, author of Where She Went, a New York Times Notable Book of 1998; The Gardens of Kyoto, winner of the Connecticut Book Award for fiction in 2002; and Our Kind, finalist for the National Book Award in 2004. A Short History of Women (Scribner, $24), is a profoundly moving portrayal of the complicated legacies of mothers and daughters, chronicling five generations of women from the close of the nineteenth century through the early years of the twenty-first. The novel opens in England in 1914 at the deathbed of Dorothy Townsend, a suffragette who starves herself for the cause. Her choice echoes in the stories of her descendants interwoven throughout: a brilliant daughter who tries to escape the burden of her mother's infamy by immigrating to America just after World War I to begin a career in science; a niece who chooses a conventional path -- marriage, children, suburban domesticity -- only to find herself disillusioned with her husband of fifty years and engaged in heartbreaking and futile antiwar protests; a great-granddaughter who wryly articulates the free-floating anxiety of the times while getting drunk on a children's playdate in post-9/11 Manhattan. In a kaleidoscope of voices and with a richness of imagery, emotion, and wit, Walbert portrays the ways in which successive generations of women have responded to what the Victorians called "The Woman Question." A recent New York Times Book Review stated, in part, "Nearly everything about Kate Walbert's new novel is wickedly smart... Her writing wears both its intelligence and ideology lightly. No manifesto, this is a gorgeously wrought and ultimately wrenching work of art... remarkable... I found myself going back time and again to reread whole paragraphs, not because they'd been obscure, but the way one might press a finger to the crumbs littering an otherwise cleaned plate: out of a desire to savor every morsel." Walbert's short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories, and numerous other publications. She lives in New York City and Connecticut with her family.
