DISTRICT HOSTS DR. BERNICE McCARTHY

Because Great Minds Don’t All Think Alike

(For immediate Release: Wednesday, June 17, 2009 – Greenwich. CT)

The Greenwich PublicSchools’ Advanced Learning Program is hosting a professional learning workshop for staff and acommunity forum with Dr. Bernice McCarthy, internationally renowned author and founder of AboutLearning, Inc. and the 4Mat System. The Community Forum will be held on Thursday, June 25,2009 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium at Eastern Middle School.

Dr. McCarthy is a prolific author who has drawn on the research of Jung, Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey,Lewin and Kolb, to create an instructional system that progresses through the complete learning cycle, using strategies that appeal to all types of learners. This innovative approach, the 4Mat System, beganas a model for instruction with students. As the value of Dr. McCarthy’s model gained wide-spreadrecognition, the 4Mat System quickly spread from the world of education into the corporate andgovernment worlds. The model is based on the understanding that people perceive and process information in differentways and demonstrates how those differences have an impact on success in learning. At the community forum, attendees will enhance their understanding of how people learn, discovertheir own particular approach to learning, and assess their own strengths and challenges as a learner.

Attendees should be ready to:

• Hunch your favorite learning style preference

• Examine how you master the less comfortable parts of the learning cycle

• Experience the learning styles of others and why professions attract the same styles

• Examine the theory and research behind style and brain processing preferences

• Enhance your understanding of the Learning Cycle and how it works in organizations

• Explore potential uses of style knowledge and the 4MAT Cycle as a teacher, or trainer, orparent or leader/manager for your life work

Dr. McCarthy's clients include:

School districts in the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe, Center for Creative Leadership, ChicagoPrincipal's Academy, IKEA, American Family, US Naval Training Centers in Great Lakes andMelbourne, The Peace Corps, The Smithsonian, National Institute of Corrections, The National ParkService, Civil Rights Project and The Aveda Corporation.

THE SUICIDE INDEX: PUTTING MY FATHER'S DEATH IN ORDER
The Suicide Index
Just Books

Free and Open to the Public

Just Books welcomes author Joan Wickersham as she explores a difficult and highly personal story in her newest book, The Suicide Index: Putting My Father's Death in Order (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25). Sixteen years ago, Joan Wickersham's father shot himself in the head. The father she loved would never have killed himself, and yet he had. His death made a mystery of his entire life. Using an index-that most formal and orderly of structures, Wickersham explores this chaotic and incomprehensible reality. Every bit of family history-marriage, parents, business failures-and every encounter with friends, doctors, and other survivors exposes another facet of elusive truth. Dark, funny, sad, and gripping, at once a philosophical and deeply personal exploration, The Suicide Index is, finally, a daughter's anguished, loving elegy to her father. Joan Wickersham is the author of the novel The Paper Anniversary. Her work has appeared in the Best American Short Stories series. An excerpt from The Suicide Index earned her the 2007 Ploughshares Cohen Award for Best Short Story. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

EXILES IN THE GARDEN
Exiles in the Garden
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Just Books is pleased to welcome Ward Just, author of 15 previous novels, including the National Book Award finalist Echo House, A Dangerous Friend, winner of the Cooper Prize for fiction from the Society of American Historians, and An Unfinished Season, winner of the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award and a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize. Just's Exiles in the Garden (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25), is a resonant story of Alec Malone, a senator's son who rejects the family business of politics for a career as a newspaper photographer. Alec and his Swiss wife, Lucia, settle in Georgetown next door to a couple whose émigré gatherings in their garden remind Lucia of all the things Americans are not. She leaves Alec as his career founders on his refusal of an assignment to cover the Vietnam War - a slyly subversive fictional choice from Ward Just, who was himself a renowned war correspondent.
