06/12/09 READER SUBMITTED COMMENTS: Question of curiosity ...

Hi,

I'm not sure if I'm reaching Bill Clark or someone at the Greenwich Gossip blog? I am very curious to know if the Michele Monson that was the former headmistress at your Whitby School in your March '08 blog could have actually accepted a job at Valparaiso University in Indiana this past school year? My brother-in-law who recently lost his wife is now dating a Michele Monson at VU and I'm just looking out for him. This woman seems a bit suspect and we're very concerned about this potential connection.

Isn't the internet the best?

Thanks much -

Sonia Johnson

Greenwich lunch wagon uses Twitter to connect with customers

Greenwich Time

GREENWICH -- Tori Walker made her way across the damp visitors parking lot from Town Hall on a dreary Thursday afternoon to place her usual lunch order with chef Kurt Shaughnessy at the red and white truck -- a burger, well done, on a toasted roll with pickles.

"Countless times I've said, 'I wish I had Kurt's number so I could order things,' " said Walker, a payroll administrator with the town.

With the technology aboard Frank's Franks, which has been serving lunch to Greenwich employees for the past few months, Walker might not have to pick up a phone......

06/12/09 Cycling can provide a good workout, as long as those putting their feet to the pedal keep equipment in proper working order

Biking a great outlet, but preparation is key
Connecticut Post

Glen Van Cura takes his time when he goes over bicycle safety and maintenance, knowing that a little preparation will make the ride more enjoyable.

"You have to plan things ahead," said the owner of Dave's Cycle and Fitness in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich. "You don't just pull the bike out of the shed and go."

That means, among other things, knowing how to change a tire, ensure its proper air pressure, lubricate a chain, adjust cables, pick the proper helmet, hydrate properly and pack tools and supplies for a long ride.

It is the kind of advice he gives his customers and community groups, such as some students at Stamford's Academy of Information Technology and Engineering, where he recently spoke in advance of a charity bike ride.

There are many opportunities to ride -- from charity events to competitions, to commuting or cruising through the neighborhood. Those who ride say they have seen more cyclists on the road in the last several years. It may be more commuters seeking to ease the sting of higher gas prices or to become more environmentally conscious. Others suggested with money tight some might be giving up gym memberships and looking for other ways to stay fit......

The Suicide Index

Free and Open to the Public

Just Books welcomes author Joan Wickersham as she explores a difficult and highly personal story in her newest book, The Suicide Index: Putting My Father's Death in Order (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25). Sixteen years ago, Joan Wickersham's father shot himself in the head. The father she loved would never have killed himself, and yet he had. His death made a mystery of his entire life. Using an index-that most formal and orderly of structures, Wickersham explores this chaotic and incomprehensible reality. Every bit of family history-marriage, parents, business failures-and every encounter with friends, doctors, and other survivors exposes another facet of elusive truth. Dark, funny, sad, and gripping, at once a philosophical and deeply personal exploration, The Suicide Index is, finally, a daughter's anguished, loving elegy to her father. Joan Wickersham is the author of the novel The Paper Anniversary. Her work has appeared in the Best American Short Stories series. An excerpt from The Suicide Index earned her the 2007 Ploughshares Cohen Award for Best Short Story. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Just's Exiles in the Garden (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25), is a resonant story of Alec Malone, a senator's son who rejects the family business of politics for a career as a newspaper photographer. Alec and his Swiss wife, Lucia, settle in Georgetown next door to a couple whose émigré gatherings in their garden remind Lucia of all the things Americans are not. She leaves Alec as his career founders on his refusal of an assignment to cover the Vietnam War - a slyly subversive fictional choice from Ward Just, who was himself a renowned war correspondent.
