05/01/09 How Did The Greenwich "King Of The AP Reports" Time Miss An AP Report About A Jobless Greenwich Man

Greenwich man, others across the country, struggle through the ...
Connecticut Post

And in Greenwich, home to hedge fund billionaires, it's David Rabin, who lost his $100,000 job last October as a senior vice president for a small financial services firm. He spends part of his morning in his basement, job hunting.

In better times, Rabin would be preparing for his annual spring golfing trip with three buddies at his condo in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Instead, the 48-year-old Rabin, wearing jeans, a blue hockey sweat shirt and white sneakers, is poring over Monster.com and other online job boards. He sends out 10 resumes a day, but has had few nibbles in six months.

A day earlier, he learned he didn't get a job recruiting members for a gym. That hurt.

"I didn't sleep a freakin' wink," he said. "If I don't fit that job, what the hell am I going to do?"
Rabin's wife, Lauren, has a marketing job. And he receives $476 weekly unemployment -- about a quarter of his former salary -- that runs out in July. Both checks keep them afloat.
Rabin copes by keeping busy. He and Lauren compile a daily list of chores. Each time he completes one, he checks off a box.

Today's list: Drive his 19-year-old son to school. Search online for cheaper auto and home insurance. (No luck there.) Look for work; his target area has expanded to Buffalo, N.Y., Ohio and Florida -- any city where he has friends or relatives. Walk the dog. Buy flip flops for his Florida-bound wife. Work out at the YMCA. Paint the basement.

"You have no idea how humbling all this is," he said. "It's extremely humbling. I'm ready to go to Stop & Shop and start bagging groceries."

"I've been in this situation before and I wasn't nearly as frightened," he said. "This is the Great Recession we're in." ...

The Greenwich Time Wishes It Got

9,000 Visitors In 120 Minutes
==============================

Ever since Greenwich Diva started blogging about Senator Stevens, CNN, Huffington Post, NBC, CBS, Washington Post, ABC and other big name "reliable" media have been coming to her blog (These organizations constantly show up on her web traffic reports).

Some of them, especially Huffington Post and Washington Post, would occasionally give her a little recognition, but I was surprised this morning when I saw on Huffington Post they put a story she posted on her blog as number one on the Internet.

From midnight up to 2:00pm today, Greenwich Diva received almost 9,000 people coming to her blog to read the story.

It takes greenwichRoundup four or five days just to get the traffic Greenwich Diva got in just two hours.

Check it out on Huffington.

Thank You!
It is easy to associate extreme poverty with other countries, far away from America, forgetting the fact that poverty is very much a reality for some children and their families, here in the United States. A recent news report illustrated life in the Appalachian Mountain areas of eastern Kentucky. The show instilled an immediate need to help these children and their families who live in unthinkable conditions, going without many items that Americans take for granted, like clean water, food, proper medical care and school supplies and personal hygiene items. These people live in an area with three times the national poverty rate, and the shortest life span in the nation.

Amy Guerrieri, an Old Greenwich resident, Mom, and owner of The Upper Crust Bagel Company, Arcadia Cafe, LexZee Catering, and founder of ROCKIN' WATER™, saw the news report and immediately committed to finding a way to help these desperate families. Together, with some of her co-workers and friends, Amy traveled to Kentucky to personally visit some of the neediest schools, health clinics and families in the rural Appalachian area, working directly with the public schools and the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) and has not created an on-going donation program - R.A.M.P. - the Rockin' Appalachian Mom Project - to help provide a healthy and nutritious alternatives to the children of that community and help support "one family at a time."

The goals of the mission are many: to deliver much needed daily essentials like personal hygiene products and school supplies, while also educating the families about basic nutrition and providing them with healthier alternatives. The group also wants to deliver a message of neighborly love and support. And while we are all facing difficult challenges in our own lives, they pale in comparison to the challenges faced daily by these fellow Americans.

Thank you for your support!

DECODING LOVE
Decoding Love
A Just Books' Event at Arcadia Cafe
20 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Are you in love, have you been in love, are you hoping for love?
Then, you need to come and hear Andrew Trees and his new book Decoding Love. Relationships should be so simple. You meet someone. You fall in love. If all goes well, that person falls in love with you. And as the fairy tale says, you both live happily ever after. But the reality is rarely so simple. Imagine Jane Austen's romances rewritten by people like Charles Darwin and Adam Smith, and you will have some idea of what sort of book this is. The simple premise behind Decoding Love is that, despite our ingrained prejudice, our current model of finding love is deeply flawed, and science can actually provide a great deal of insight into our romantic quest. It will take something we think we know well-how to find love-and reveal that many of our assumptions are wrong.

A MEMOIR OF GROWING UP CULT
Cartwheels in a Sari

A Just Books' Event at Arcadia Cafe
20 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Come hear this AMAZING and TRUE story that happened right here in Connecticut and meet Jayanti Tamm as she introduces her life story Cartwheels in a Sari: A Memoir of Growing Up Cult. Cartwheels tells the story of Jayanti's life as guru Sri Chinmoy's "Chosen One." Until she was 25 (when she left the cult for good), Guru dictated every aspect of her life, from arranging her parents' marriage to selecting her soul to be born as his chosen disciple, naming her, and dictating how she spent her days and if/where she went to school. Chinmoy's ashram was in Queens and the headquarters for his movement, helmed by Jayanti's parents, was in Connecticut. In this colorful, eye-opening memoir, Tamm shares the trauma and triumphs of growing up 'cult' in mainstream America and the powerful hold of such a lifestyle. She also reveals a new side to the enigmatic personality of Chinmoy, who until his death in 2007, managed to convince thousands of his disciples and celebrities -- Princess Diana, Carlos Santana, Susan Sarandon, Richard Gere, Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, Nelson Mandela -- that he was merely a humble emissary of peace. Jayanti Tamm is a graduate of Greenwich Academy and is now an English professor at Ocean County College in New Jersey.

Just Books

Free and Open to the Public

Come to Just Books on Saturday, May 30, for LOCAL AUTHORS DAY! Luc Hardy will be signing copies of his beautiful book Arctic Transitions: Witness to Change - Young Ambassadors in Nunavut. In the summer of 2008, Greenwich resident Luc Hardy led a 16-person expedition to the Canadian Arctic. As the founder of the Pax Arctica Initiative, Luc assembled a diverse group of adults and "Young Ambassadors", ages 9 to 17, to eyewitness and report on the changes occurring in the Arctic. Arctic-Transitions brings to life beautiful and inaccessible regions through the use of stunning photography.

Don Harrison will introduce his newest book Connecticut Baseball: The Best of the Nutmeg State. Twin passions - newspapers and baseball - provided the impetus for Don Harrison's early career in sportswriting. In a sense, they have led to Connecticut Baseball: The Best of the Nutmeg State, his new book about Connecticut's myriad contributions to Major League Baseball. Don Harrison is an award-winning sports writer and has written articles for The Sporting News, Sports Quarterly-Baseball, The New York Times, Connecticut magazine, Waterbury Republican-American, the Greenwich Citizen, and dozens of other publications.

Skip Allocco is back by popular demand to introduce his newest book in his Lemon-AID! series of books for kids that focus on the positive. In You, in the End, to Yourself Must be TRUE!, which is book #2 in the series, Allocco illustrates that the road to finding your true passion in life is not always clearly marked, resulting in a journey full of twists, and turns, and dead ends. It's a humorous look at a serious dilemma that many of us face in the transition to becoming an "adult."

Torrington school board names 4th superintendent candidate

Waterbury Republican American

TORRINGTON — School officials confirmed Thursday that Greenwich School Superintendent Betty J. Sternberg is the fourth candidate seeking the interim superintendent's post here.

The board interviewed three candidates Wednesday night: former business manager and interim superintendent Edward Arum, former Orange superintendent Wayne Sweeney, and former Colebrook superintendent David R. Wittmer.
Acting personnel committee Chairman Brian Mattiello confirmed Thursday that Sternberg is the fourth candidate, and he is optimistic an interview can be arranged by next week.

The board is seeking an interim schools chief to take over July 1, when Acting Superintendent Barbara Campbell will return to her assistant superintendent's post.

The interim will serve until a permanent replacement is found for Susan W. O'Brien, and that search is expected to be concluded in six months.

05/01/09 Greenwich Publicity Pro Jenifer Howard Opens Up A New PR Shop

PHOTO: Brian A. Pounds/ Nowalk Advocate Photographer - From left, PR Synergy Plus founding members Nancy Moon of Fairfield, Jenifer Howard of Greenwich, Victor Emmanuel of Port Chester, N.Y., and Deborah Burns of Fairfield launched their new public relations agency.

By Rob Varnon

FAIRFIELD -- Five public relations experts, with more than 100 years of combined experience, have formed a new firm, PR Synergy Plus.

"We all know each other," said Deborah Burns, PR Synergy's managing principal. The five formed a consortium a few years ago to discuss best practices and ideas, but decided to formalize the relationship to take advantage of each other's strengths.

PR Synergy is a holding company for the five firms the founders run independently. Burns owns Burns Communications of Fairfield, with expertise in wealth management and branding; Victor Emmanuel runs VJE Consultants of Port Chester, N.Y., specializing in business-to-business marketing and crisis management; Nancy Moon of Fairfield owns Moon Public Relations, focusing on sports marketing and green initiatives; Jenifer Howard, owner of Greenwich-based J. Howard Public Relations, concentrates on food, beverage and arts and music promotions; and Kelley Connors, of KC Healthcare Communications of Norwalk, focuses on health care public relations.

Although all are full-service firms, Emmanuel said the new partnership allows him and his colleagues to offer experience in specific areas to existing and new clients. That strategy can help them keep clients and win new ones, he said.

"They might as well hang together, they're hanging alone," Jack O'Dwyer, public relations industry watchdog, said about the new firm.....

....PR Synergy and its members have done work for US Trust, Rockit Solutions of Stamford, Edy's Ice Cream, Microsoft, the NFL Players Association and other companies, large and small. Burns said fees depend upon the needs of the client.

"Clients can work with PR Synergy Plus members one-on-one, as a small team, or when projects demand, as a scaled up full-service agency," she said "We will work on a project for a retainer fee basis. Our minimum monthly retainer fee is between $5,000 to $7,500 per month for a basic PR program and minimum six-month contract. As far as account structure, whomever brings in the business will direct the business and determine which PR Synergy Plus team members are the best fit to meet client's specific needs."......
