03/23/09 What is going on???

To the Editor,

On Saturday night, one of the Darien High School nurse's was arrested for serving alcohol to minors. Her daughter, a junior at the DHS,invited what appears to be most of the junior class. The police showed up and did their job. Most likely the 50+ cars tipped someone off. Or was it someone puking in the bushes?

A few years ago, the Darien girl's varsity lacrosse coach got a "slap on the wrist" for drinking with some of her players at a party. The police were not involved and the story was put to rest very quickly. Who would want to peg THE COACH OF THE YEAR as anything but a talented coach?

Recently, in Darien, the Greenwich boy's lacrosse coach was arrested for his 3rd or 4th DWI. The Greenwich Superintendent removed the guy from his coaching position. That was the right thing to do.

I have no tolerance for parents who allow kids to drink at their homes supervised or not. These KIDS end up on the road with me, my family and friends. They may not have had a serious car accident, but it's inevitable. It's only a matter of time before some innocent victim ends up DEAD on the hood of their car.

Like Joey.

I bring this to the attention of the surrounding towns (Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, and Stamford)because it is a STATE WIDE PROBLEM reaching epidemic proportions. Most kids in high school drink, many drive shit faced, and some have the nerve to bring water bottles filled with vodka to class. Drink before, during, and after school? Are you kidding?

Looking at their parents, teachers, and role models, is there any doubt why this is going on? Are the adults involved reliving their adolescence? Were they complete losers then, trying to make up for it now? What is it? Do these parents and teachers think this is appropriate and acceptable behavior? 40 year olds drinking with 15 year olds?? What the hell is wrong with you people?????

Try this on... Anyone who looks the other way, is just as guilty as the people who drink and drive. When you are at the scene of a FATAL DRUNK DRIVING ACCIDENT, you look at someone whose life was cut short. Body parts strewn, twisted metal, broken glass, blood splattered on the road, and blood pools inside the vehicles. If that isn't enough, imagine the family arriving at the hospital morgue to ID their loved one. Do you get it yet???

And finally, if the Mayor's son, or a Senator, or a doctor, teacher, or coach DRINK WITH KIDS OR ALLOW THEM TO DRINK AND DRIVE, they deserve a little jail time where they can mull over the reality of their stupidity. Then go find another job. There are sharper people waiting to fill your shoes.

For Immediate Release
ROB MATHES TO PERFORM DANA'S ANGELS
BENEFIT CONCERT

April 17 Concert in Greenwich to Raise Funds and Awareness for
Niemann-Pick Type C Disease (NPC)

(GREENWICH, Conn., March 22, 2009) -Greenwich's own multi-talented performer and music director ROB MATHES, fresh from the recent excitement of musically directing President Obama's inaugural We Are One concert at the Lincoln Memorial, will perform a one-night only concert in Greenwich as a benefit for DANA'S ANGELS RESEARCH TRUST (DART), a charity dedicated to funding medical research, education, and care for the treatment or cure of Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NPC) and other similar genetic diseases. The Rob Mathes Benefit Concert for Dana's Angels Research Trust will be held Friday, April 17, 2009, at the auditorium at Greenwich High School, 10 Hillside Drive in Greenwich, Conn. Tickets are $75 per person and are available online at http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102517495603&e=001oa4EqP93xJqb4zL5NpdXglAml6S538LMx6kyXOUqF4hjlHJkxGno1uc0jmQbIi2LpEdwhG3TRIFBF-WZgntZiIlyLX7rjEtDd7nriFvhSWyFcNq80yIYDQ== or for group sales, by calling 203-861-2063. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. and it is general seating.

NPC is often called children's Alzheimer's. DART's efforts may also help millions of people (adults and children) suffering from NPC, Alzheimer's, heart disease, strokes, and other disorders that appear to be related to the metabolism of cholesterol. Although children and some adults worldwide are afflicted, research has been extremely limited primarily because of insufficient funding, the smaller population of those affected, and a lack of public awareness. Currently, children with NPC rarely live past their early teens, and there is no cure for NPC. Today, there are limited treatment options, with experimental therapies and medications being tried with hope that there will be progress.

For the Marella family, they knew their daughter Dana, from the age of five, who was a happy, caring and energetic child, had balance and learning difficulties. Over time, Dana's visual and cognitive abilities, and her balance became progressively worse. After years of searching for answers to her challenges, Dana was diagnosed in 2002 at the age of eight with NPC, a genetic disorder that prohibits the metabolism of cholesterol and other lipids. In 2004, at the age of 5, Dana's brother Andrew, the Marella's 4th child, was also diagnosed with NPC. Today, Dana is in a wheelchair, no longer walks or talks and requires total care. She currently has issues with breathing and swallowing and is undergoing aggressive treatment for the disease. Her brother Andrew, now age 9 and seemingly normal, is also being treated.

The benefit concert on April 17 will feature Grammy and Emmy nominated Rob Mathes, who is best known for musically directing the Obama inauguration concert, the Kennedy Center Honors, and performing his annual Christmas concert. Mathes will put on a benefit concert for Dana's Angels Research Trust, a charity close to Rob's heart.

"Phil and Andrea Marella are tireless in their pursuit of a cure for Niemann-Pick Type C disease," noted Rob Mathes. "It is my hope that this concert will bring some much needed awareness to this disease and support for Dana's Angels Research Trust. I told the Marellas that they didn't need stars, what they needed was 'COMMUNITY.' I want to get a group of people together, play great music for them, talk about Dana and Andrew, have a little get together before and after the concert and get the Marellas and their struggle on people's radar locally. Greenwich is the kind of community that could and would help build up and comfort a family like the Marellas and make a difference in funding DART's research. That is my hope."

Performing with Rob Mathes will be a 14-piece band, including some of the finest musicians in the New York area, with Will Lee on bass guitar, from the Late Show with David Letterman; Shawn Pelton on Drums from Saturday Night Live; Billy Masters on Guitar who has played with Suzanne Vega and Cry, Cry, Cry; a terrific horn section; and vocals by Vaneese Thomas, the daughter of R&B legend Rufus Thomas, and local Greenwich resident Ian Cron.

Rob Mathes' bio is extremely diverse and his work spans musically directing the Obama inaugural concert, the Kennedy Center Honors, which he has been nominated twice for an Emmy (2008 was his sixth year as music director for the awards show); producing the top five Panic At The Disco album "Pretty. Odd," and other projects with artists such as Carly Simon and Rod Stewart; writing classical commissions for The Nashville Symphony and The Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Slatkin who recently won the Grammy for Best Classical Recording; working on string arrangements for a bunch of young artists, including Secondhand Serenadel, Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, and Dashboard Confessional; working on a track for RnB singer Bettye Lavette who stole the show at the Kennedy Center this year; writing orchestral music for Eliane Elias, based on the music of Jobim; producing a CD by Michael Cavanaugh, who was discovered by Billy Joel and asked to star in the Twyla Tharp musical Movin' Out, based around Billy's songs; producing and arranging the critically acclaimed Lullabies & Wildflowers CD for Broadway Star Melissa Errico; and securing a new publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing, the largest music publisher in the world. Rob is currently working on new music for the upcoming Billy Bob Thornton film "Manure," which will be in theaters in 2009; and he is producing several tracks of Latin music for the next Vanessa Williams record to be released this spring on Concord Records. Rob has also worked with other top music icons like Elton John, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Luciano Pavarotti, Jay Z, Phil Ramone, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne, Butch Walker, Hall and Oates, Yo Yo Ma, Renee Fleming and many more. A three-month-old boy was mauled to death by his grandmother̢۪s two pet dogs
yesterday while she was baby-sitting him.

Denise Wilson was left covered in blood as she desperately battled to save grandson
Jaden Mack after he was savaged by her Staffordshire bull terrier and Jack Russell.

Terrified Denise, 54, screamed out for help as the dogs bit at the baby's throat
while he lay in his moses basket at her home in Ystrad Mynach in South Wales.

A neighbour wrestled the dogs off Jaden and tried to give him the kiss of life.
But the baby was too badly injured and he died in Prince Charles Hospital in
Merthyr Tydfil shortly after the attack in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A foster mother has been struck off by a council after a teenage Muslim girl
in her care became a Christian.

The carer, who has ten years' experience and has looked after more than 80 children,
said she was "devastated" by the decision.

"This is my life," she revealed. "It is not just a job for me. It is a vocation.
I love what I do. It is also my entire income. I am a single carer, so that is all I have to live on."

The foster mother said she had recently bought a larger car and had been renting a farmhouse,
with a pony in a field, so that she could provide more disadvantaged children with a new life.

Baby P chief speaks at last ... but there's no sign of an apology

Baby P chief speaks at last ... but there's no sign of an apology

CLICK HERE For The Full Article:

The disgraced council boss sacked over the Baby P scandal is under fire for
failing to apologise for the toddler's death during her first interview since her sacking.

Instead, Sharon Shoesmith, the former £100,000-a-year head of Haringey
council children's services, blamed everyone but herself.

Among others, she attacked Ministers for their handling of the affair,
accused the Press and public of a witch-hunt and claimed she was blatantly
discredited by an independent inquiry.

And she described in self-pitying detail the tragedy's toll on herself and her family,
causing dismay yesterday among those close to the case.

Ann Walker, the childminder who repeatedly warned social services about the toddler's
pitiful condition, told The Mail on Sunday that Mrs Shoesmith should have
'either apologised or said nothing at all'.

News Item One:

The Governor's eyebrow should trump the law
The Governor's eyebrow should trump the law

CLICK HERE For The Full Article:

Hordes of lawyers are infesting Britain. Wouldn't it be better for good
judgment to prevail over the loophole seekers? This is a story about a
mystery widely discussed in recent months: the Governor's eyebrow.

Let's approach the facial hair by way of a riddle. What do the Baby P affair,
the assisted suicide debate (rekindled yesterday by Patricia Hewitt),
Lord Turner of Ecchinswell's report this week on the future of financial
services regulation and a new scrap between The Guardian and Barclays
about the avoidance of taxes, have in common?

In every dispute the Governor's eyebrow stands twitching at the centre of arguments about methods of adjudication. Oliver Letwin, the Tories' policy chief, set this out in a
speech about Baby P this year: at issue (he said) was a choice between
rule-based and judgment-based regulation.

The rule-based approach aims to capture what a regulation means in careful, comprehensive, exhaustively assembled words: an authoritative text. At its best this offers certainty to citizens anxious to know if they are complying with the rules. At its
worst it leads to the letter trumping the spirit of regulation; to box-ticking
and the recruitment of hordes of lawyers to help people to look for ways round
the spirit of the rules while obeying their letter.

News Item Two:

Couple's distress at baby ruling
Couple's distress at baby ruling

CLICK HERE For The Full Article:

The parents of a seriously ill baby have said they are ''deeply distressed''
by a court ruling allowing him to die. They said they planned to ''enjoy
what little time'' they had left with their ''beautiful and beloved boy''.

He has a rare metabolic disorder and has suffered brain damage and major
respiratory failure. The parents failed to overturn an earlier ruling and
it is understood doctors will stop treating the nine-month-old within 24 hours.
''Belief in his humanity'' was the reason they had fought the medical advice
that he should be allowed to die, they said.

''Life is worthwhile'' Two appeal judges have upheld a High Court ruling which
gives doctors at an unnamed NHS trust powers to turn off the ventilator keeping
''baby OT'' alive. There is no further avenue of appeal for the parents.

The couple had sought to appeal against a judge's ruling on Thursday that it
was in the boy's best interests to withdraw his ''life sustaining treatment''.
In a statement, they said they knew of only one other child with their son's
condition and everyone was in ''unknown territory''.
