After dribbling a soccer ball along the road 179 miles from Boston, wearing down three pairs of sneakers and three soccer balls, "Survivor" winner Ethan Zohn arrived in Greenwich Monday.

Invoking the names of Barry Goldwater and Ron Paul, Libertarian candidate M.A. Carrano kicked off his campaign Monday in Connecticut's 4th Congressional District with a conservative appeal for less government and a noninterventionist foreign policy.

Jason Cunningham, one of two suspects charged with drug possession following the investigation into the 2004 overdose death of John Bria Jr., entered a not guilty plea Monday.

The 24-year-old Cunningham, who was arraigned in state Superior Court in Stamford Monday morning, is charged with one count of possession of narcotics - a felony charge.

Matthew Maddox, the Stamford-based attorney representing Cunningham, said the case was granted a continuance until Oct. 20, at which point a pre-trial conference will be held.Maddox did not comment further.

Cunningham was charged Sept. 9, nearly nine months after police had re-opened the investigation into the case, citing new evidence, according to Chief David Ridberg.
....Bria, 19, was found dead in his Hollow Wood Lane house on Jan. 16, 2004, in what the state medical examiner ruled an accidental heroin and cocaine overdose, according to police reports.

Cunningham and several other friends had been at Bria's house the night prior for a party in which drugs were taken, according to a police report. At the time of the death, no charges were filed against those who attended the party.

Maddox previously stated that he does not think the state has enough evidence to prove the charge against Cunningham, saying police typically need to recover physical evidence of the drug from the suspect.
Savanna Jean Lamotte, 23, of 70 Fountain St., New Haven was also charged with one count of possession of narcotics on Sept. 9, police said. She is scheduled to appear in court Friday. Police said the charges facing Cunningham and Lamotte do not implicate them in Bria's death.

A state Superior Court judge Monday stiffened the bond provisions for Gerardo Lombardi, the 75-year-old Pemberwick man charged with murdering his former daughter-in-law early this month.

Ham Ave. civil rights suit tossed

...While noting major disparities between Hamilton Avenue School and other public elementary schools, the investigators "found insufficient evidence ... that comparable resources were denied on the bases of race and national origin," wrote Ralph Montalvo, a compliance officer involved in the probe.

Fifty-seven percent of Hamilton Avenue students are minorities, far higher than the district's average among elementary schools of 25 percent, officials said. With 40 percent of students qualifying for subsidized lunch, the school also has the largest population of poor students in town.

Hamilton Avenue students left their old, mold-infested building in 2005 so that renovations could begin there, and soon moved into the modular buildings with the expectation that they'd be staying for 18 months while the school was being rebuilt.

However, delays plagued the construction project, and students remained in the modulars until March 2008, when officials discovered a mold infestation and, following an emergency evacuation, dispersed the students to other schools across the district.

To the editor:

The article in the Greenwich Time on Sept. 20 about Theresa Stanton's bout with the wild turkey at Greenwich Point ("One tough turkey: Henrietta leaves mom with concerns for safety") was of great interest to me, having had the same experience the previous week. It was very scary.

In my declining years, I don't need to be playing tag with a belligerent wild turkey.
As noted in recent articles, the turkey now sees humans as a source of food. I suspect there have been numerous similar encounters with "Henrietta" as well.

Before someone gets injured or the town finds itself with another lawsuit against it, I strongly urge those in control to relocate the bird to a less-populated area than Greenwich Point.

09/22/09 READER SUBMITTED COMMENTS: Pisani is a tool

Hey,

I read your piece about Joe Pisani's new hot blog and couldn't stop laughing. I have found his former columns to be about as narrow-minded, sarcastic, and cynical as possible. I thought he was finally gone!!!

He single-handedly ruined a Catholic parish by incessant hyper- vigilant front page visibility, and the priest who stole money and led that "immoral life" is still not in jail. Every non-Catholic had a field day with this over publicized, almost personal vendetta Pisani had with Bishop William Lori and the Diocese of Bridgeport. It was front page for a year, ultimately forcing two gifted priests to leave the priesthood without a trace.

He targets single women, his obnoxious daughters, and divorcees for his new columns, blaming these woman for his daughters inept dating skills. Drunks are another target. I love a good happy drunk. The Catholic Church is always another. Middle age-is his newest complaint-is 58 middle age? I'm thinking 45 is. And as far as I can see, someone should teach Joe the art of growing gracefully.

He is considered by a few, mostly himself and his little bobbled-headed women editor friends, to be a "devout Catholic." Does Joe have any male friends or do they threaten his lack of masculinity too much? I'm Catholic, and very few Catholics write condescending and judgmental articles targeting innocent groups of people. He generalizes and pretends he is more insightful than the rest of us, virtually proving he knows very little about real life. His views are obnoxious. Someone should wake him up and tell his he is not Henry David Thoreau......nor will he every be. Thoreau had class, a brain, and a conscience. Pisani falls short in all three...

Susie Costaregeni (sp?),was a former student of his many years ago. I think he taught her 9th grade English at St. Joseph'sin Trumbull(though she clearly didn't pay attention to the subject). I wouldn't even want to begin to figure out the obsession the two have for each other. And far be it for me to add to the rumors already around town. Susie cannot write, has no grasp of the English language, and why she follows in the footsteps of her former "mentor" (see her goodbye letter to Joe in the Advocate archives) and works for free is beyond me. It seems like a high school love, gone bad which turned into an office fling, ultimately lacking an office. Haha. . But she's still single...or was last week. Oops....Joe got married eventually, but not to a bimbo half his age (well, she is 48, I think, but acts like, well, like a spoiled brat. Maybe it a "father figure" thing. Could Joe be the daddy she never had? Oh, I could have such fun with this topic...

Her columns, if you can call them columns, were crap. How many times were Harry Connick Jr and his wife Jill spotted doing nothing? Who cares? They live in this area and are pretty mellow, normal people. Who was seen eating sushi while strolling Greenwich Ave? Who cares. Does everyone strolling down "the avenue" have to worry about her catching them tossing garbage into a garbage receptacle? The only thing I have noticed about Susie, is she is the last to turn down a free drink from any loser. And she spends enough time in the Greenwich bars so that she is never far from the action, both for personal reasons, or professionally scooping up the gossip garbage. And it is all garbage. I I love the bar scene and spend too much time looking for love....haha.

Joe Pisani. Every column he writes, I can rip apart. Especially the ones for the Catholic newspapers. I know my facts, Joe doesn't. Maybe he's a convert. I have some friends who know him well......and don't like his new "metro" inflated demeanor, heck, they never liked him period. He is working for the Dielenschneider Group in NY. Robert Dilenschneider is a self-proclaimed authority on everything....but in reality, he inherited a bunch of money from his mother, is a lazy ass, and likes to see his name in print. Lives in a mini mansion in Darien, I think. He like to spend money too, and he's an idiot. I think he wrote one book which was a marginal success. However, he's another loser from the area. I met Bob and thought AH immediately.. I have also met Joe, Bishop William Lori, and Pope Benedict XVl. Our social circles must cross sometimes! Ha ha What a strange coincidence. Maybe I should address that. I'm a lot younger than these people.

I couldn't care less about the "newest hottest blog"....but I'm sick of his old-style, say nothing new, journalism. I follow it b/c a friend is equally amused by Joe's shortsightedness, and sends me the links. Yesterday, Joe wrote up about scantly clad, almost nude, girls popping up on his computer screen. Why doesn't that happen to me? I guess I don't visit as many porn sites. Oh well. There's Joe trying to come up w/more excuses either for his wife or new boss or whomever, and proving his male will power and virtuous behavior exceeds the rest of ours. Nice try.

Maybe break up this letter and use what you want. I would certainly give you some more constructive articles. I'm a writer who is bored at the moment. I don't want Joe to target me in his next column, or sue (no pun intended) me. Believe me, he would. He has some anger issues.

Regards

RC
