He plays baseball, debates, and edits the school newspaper. More importantly, Ryan is a Student of Objectivism and writes all of the content tagged “Objectivist content“. His view point holds fast to the philosophy conceptualized by Ayn Rand (the author of thematic novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged) and is also influenced by other advocates of limited government. 04/15/08 - Richard Duffee: "No, Jim Himes is much better; Chris Shays is a true believer in the war and the imperial presidency."

County Fair: Impeach and a Pair

fairfieldweekly.com, CT

In 2006, Richard Duffee, the Green Party candidate for Connecticut's fourth congressional district, dropped out and endorsed Democrat Diane FarrellChris Shays. This year, Duffee says he's running again and has no plans to back likely Democratic nominee Jim Himes since he won't run on a promise to impeach George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Impeachment, says Duffee is more vital in post-Bush 2009 than it was in 2007....

....But back to the issue at hand: The impeachment of the president (which all of a sudden seems reasonable and doable). Himes, the former chair of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee, says "as a matter of principle, we should hold any officials who've broken the law to task. God knows, Chris Shays has taken no action. But for a guy like me who won't have Bush and Cheney leaving office by the time I get to Washington, I don't see it as a worthy use of time."....

....Himes, hoping to throw that knock-out blow Farrell almost delivered twice to the 15-full-term congressman (she got 48 percent of the vote in 2004 and 2006), doesn't see Duffee as a potential spoiler. "I think the people in this district can see that there is a clear choice between me, someone who cares deeply about the Constitution, and Chris Shays, someone who's voted to help destroy it.

04/15/08 - No wonder Lieberman is pissed.

Why Does Joe Lieberman Hate Obama so Much as to Suggest He is a ...
Huffington Post, NY

Fox News' Judge Andrew Napolitano asked Sen. Joe Lieberman if Obama is "a Marxist, as Bill Kristol says might be the case?"

"I must say that's a good question," replied Lieberman, before stepping back to say that he would "hesitate to say he's a Marxist."

The feud goes back to 2006, when Lieberman was Obama's mentor and close friend in the Senate.

According to an AP story, Obama was the keynote speaker in front of 1,700-plus party members who gathered in a ballroom at the Connecticut Convention Center for the $175-per-head fundraiser.

Obama was a rising star in the Democratic Party and was being hailed as a future presidential candidate. He wasted little time getting to that point, calling it the "elephant in the room," but also carefully praised Lieberman's intellect, character and qualifications:

"The fact of the matter is, I know some in the party have differences with Joe. I'm going to go ahead and say it...I am absolutely certain Connecticut is going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the U.S. Senate so he can continue to serve on our behalf."

At the time, Ned Lamont, a Democratic activist and anti-war candidate from Greenwich, was challenging pro-Iraq war Lieberman for the party's nomination. Legions of supporters of both Lieberman and Lamont were in attendance the dinner.

Yet, seven months later, in October, Obama changed his tune.

The Illinois senator and potential 2008 presidential candidate sent out an e-mail message praising Lamont.

"Ned Lamont has waged an impressive grass-roots campaign to give the people of Connecticut a choice in the November Senate election," Obama wrote. "Please join me in supporting Ned Lamont with your hard work on-the-ground in these closing weeks of the campaign."

The Lamont campaign said Obama's e-mail went to about 5,000 Connecticut residents, according to an AP Story.

At the time, Lamont aides said they welcomed the support of Obama, who was enjoying a surge in popularity-- due to renewed interest in the senator's 2002 anti-war speech as speculation about his national ambitions mounted. And it wasn't just words... Obama also gave $5,000 to Lamont's campaign through a political committee.

It was unexpected, but it made sense. Lamont had become a viable candidate, and his fervent opposition to the Iraq war could certainly help the presidential hopeful burnish his anti-war creds...

No wonder Lieberman is pissed.

04/15/08 - Associate Editor Karen Hunter handles concerns about the accuracy and fairness of news coverage

Caption Wasn't Funny To Some

Hartford Courant

By Karen Hunter, Reader Represenitive

The caption that won last week's photo caption contest was seen as inappropriate by a couple of readers....

A reader wrote, "Your paper selected the winning caption, for the women underwater, as 'my toe is stuck in the drain.' This is sick!! There have been too many kids who have died in this or similar manners. I believe that your paper should print an apology for your actions."

A Windsor reader wrote, "I am disgusted with the paper this morning. I had to stop reading it and immediately got a stomachache.

The winning photo caption entry for the female swimmer underwater was 'No read my lips! My toe's caught in the drain!'

"Have you all not read your own paper the past year?!!! A 6-year-old boy in Greenwich died from being caught in a drain last July. You printed at least two articles about it since it happened. This was not funny. I am sick to my stomach, and pray that....

04/15/08 - Greenwich Home Prices Rose 4.7% - Home Prices Vary Greatly Depending On The Zip Code

Where the Home Price Gaps Are Biggest

Find out where the gaps are greatest

by Prashant Gopal
BusinessWeek

Not even the richest U.S. metro areas are immune from the housing downturn.

Despite their glittering reputations, places such as Beverly Hills and Paradise Valley, Ariz., have seen their median home prices drop hard. But don't expect an Okie-style exodus of Ferraris and Range Rovers to cheaper neighborhoods any time soon. At the very top of the housing food chain, people are still buying—and spending—like it was 2005.

For super-rich buyers, both here and abroad, the credit crunch isn't much of a concern when buying a house because they have easy access to cash and debt. And even in the country's priciest markets, there aren't many houses worth $5 million or more, so demand nearly always outstrips supply.

Which means that even though housing market in states like California and Florida have been clobbered overall, certain exclusive enclaves remain unfazed.

Palmy Days

For example, it was reported Apr. 6 that the oceanfront Palm Beach (Fla.) estate of the billionaire founder and chairman of Jones Apparel Group (JNY), Sidney Kimmel, had found a buyer at $81.5 million, just 24 days after being put on the market. If the sale closes, it will be the highest price ever paid in Palm Beach.

And in Beverly Hills, where house prices dropped 8.7% in the fourth quarter of 2007 compared with a year earlier, the 29-bedroom, 40-bath former home of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and actress Marion Davies is on the market for $165 million, the most expensive listing ever.

In early March, the 29-room townhouse once owned by the late publisher of Penthouse, Robert Guccione, on Manhattan's Upper East Side sold to Harbinger Capital Partners founder Philip Falcone for $49 million. What makes the sale even more interesting is that the property was listed at $29.99 million in 2003. This means that, despite the general housing malaise, the property sold for 66% more than its asking price five years ago.

"Demand [for luxury real estate] is remaining strong, and even if [prices in elite Zips are] going down they're not going down as much as the overall market," said Laurie Moore-Moore, founder of the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing in Dallas, which trains agents to work in the high-end international property market. "What it means is there's a segment of the population that can afford the price point, and those folks are continuing to buy."

BusinessWeek.com, with the help of Fiserv Lending Solutions, evaluated the performance of some of the nation's most elite Zip Codes. We ranked communities based on the relative expense of houses compared to their surrounding metro area (The top ranked community, Paradise Valley, Ariz., had a median home price of $1.8 million, or 7.5 times the median for the Phoenix metro area). Of the 25 high-end enclaves on the list, all but one location performed better than its metropolitan areas in terms of 2007 home price appreciation.

General Slide

Still, prices in most of the high-end communities on our list, including Beverly Hills; Vero Beach, Fla.; and La Jolla in San Diego, experienced declines in the fourth quarter of 2007 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to Fiserv. Even so, the strength of the multimillion-dollar mansions at the top of the market appears to be tempering what might otherwise have been worse.

Median home prices in Santa Barbara, on California's Pacific Coast, fell 10% in the fourth quarter of 2007 compared with the same period a year earlier. But prices in the Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Goleta metro area took a 20.6% nosedive during the same period.

Pricey markets in the Northeast, which saw more moderate price jumps during the housing boom, appear to be doing better. Selling prices in upscale Greenwich, Conn., rose 4.7% while prices in its local Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk metro area stayed flat.....

04/15/08 - “The house is like a work of art and it’s priced that way,” says local broker Barbara Wells, of Prudential Connecticut Realty

Leona Helmsley’s Greenwich Estate Hits Market at $125 Million

Wall Street Journal Blogs, NY

Leona Helmsley’s Greenwich, Conn., estate (pictured here) is officially on the market with a hefty $125 million price tag. (Property taxes: over $1.8 million.) There will be a broker open house for the home on Round Hill Road today, but no cellphones or cameras will be allowed, a local broker tells us....

...The listing agent is David Ogilvy of Christie’s Great Estates.

Known as Dunnellen Hall, the estate of more than 40 acres was at the center of Mrs. Helmsley’s 1989 federal tax-evasion trial, when she was accused of illegally billing her company for more than $3 million of property renovations. The former model, dubbed the “queen of mean,” served 19 months in federal prison. She died in August at age 87....

...The $125 million price tag is considered hefty even for Greenwich, where few residential deals have topped $100 million. Industrialist Daniel Gray Reid paid $1 million to build it. (See ” ‘Queen of Mean’ Lair to List for $125 Million“).

Dunnellen Hall is one of the few intact historic estates left in town, says an archivist with Greenwich’s Historical Society in this Journal article. Many Greenwich homes are being torn down, according to this Journal article from Saturday. –Christina S.N. Lewis
