09/23/07 - Republican Town Committee Phone Survey Causes Some Controversy In Greenwich

HEADLINE:

STORY:

While Democrats enjoy reciting poll numbers, especially when they reflect poorly on Republicans, Frank Farricker thinks that actually engaging in polling is something less than appropriate.
Greenwich's Republican Town Committee this week reached out to voters to get a sense of the priorities of the people of the Town. I was the recipient of one of the calls. It was simple and straight forward. The caller identified himself as being with the RTC, asked me what issue was most important to me and then asked if the election was held today, who would I vote for. All told, it took no more than 30 seconds. ...

09/23/07 - New Lebanon and Hamilton Avenue Schools Have Too Many Minority Students, And Old Greenwichs Will Soon Have Too Many White Students

HEADLINE:

QUOTE Of THE DAY:

"All kids should be educated equally regardless of what they look like and where they came from." - Natalie Queen.

STORY:

As Greenwich considers adding magnet programs they hope will scatter children of different races across the district, some white parents have spoken out against underperforming, non-English speaking students coming to their child's school and taking attention away from their child.

They also have questioned school officials about why students at schools with many underachieving, minority students would get more money for a magnet program compared to their child's school.

Supporters of the Board of Education's task force, which is examining racial imbalance, say that the comments of those parents are actually bigoted remarks veiled in the language of requests to preserve a neighborhood school system the state says is racially segregated.

Natalie Queen, who is set to become the first black woman to be elected to the Board of Education, said that when people oppose opening up their neighborhood schools to other parts of town, it's akin to "structural racism"......

09/23/07 - Greenwich Resident Sells Painting To The Getty

HEADLINE:

STORY:

What's new at the J. Paul Getty Museum? A batch of artworks acquired by curatorial sleuthing, big-budget shopping and adroit deal-making -- in one case involving the restitution of Nazi loot.

The additions, to be announced today, encompass a French classical landscape painting by 17th century master Claude Lorrain, a rare double-sided drawing of a Tahitian "Eve" by Postimpressionist Paul Gauguin, a trove of 834 photographs by pioneer photojournalist Felice Beato and a large photo collage of an octopus by Los Angeles artist Tim Hawkinson. Although none of the works is currently on view, they will go up at the museum in the next few months.

The landscape, "Coast View With the Abduction of Europa," is a signature painting by a French artist -- widely known as Claude -- whose artistic prowess and fascination with the Roman countryside have been widely emulated. With its dazzling atmospheric effects, exquisite detail and solid compositional structure, his work is thought to epitomize the "ideal" landscape, a representation of natural beauty that seems to surpass the real thing.......

...The heir, Marei von Saher of Greenwich, Conn., eventually received 202 paintings, including the Claude. She consigned many of the works to auction at Christie's. The Getty purchased the Claude -- which had been displayed at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam -- for an undisclosed sum in a private transaction brokered by the auction house. ...

STORY:

When Citadel Investment Group expanded into the energy business in 2002, Chief Executive Kenneth Griffin was part of a team that interviewed hundreds of potential employees and hired only a dozen.

Was there anything they did or say to win him over?

'You want individuals who have demonstrated they're disciplined, passionate, committed and ambitious, whether they start a business in their college dorm room or they organized something in the community,' Griffin said in a March 2006 interview.

But certain Citadel job candidates these days might need something else on their resume: experience helping to run a publicly traded company.

Last week, the privately held Chicago-based hedge fund hired John Andrews, the head of investor relations for publicly traded Goldman Sachs, signaling that it might join the small but growing ranks of hedge funds and private-equity firms doing initial public offerings.....

......ESL Investments, Edward Lampert's hedge fund, for example, is headquartered in a low-rise building in Greenwich, Conn., and operates with a bare-bones staff of a few dozen..... offer new hires, ...

09/23/07 - Players Sought For Gentle Sport Of Lawn Bowling

King Henry VIII once banned lawn bowling for all but the wealthiest. The reason he gave: people were spending so much time at it that they were neglecting their jobs.

HEADLINE:

STORY:

It took only one game for Jack Miller to become enchanted with the ancient sport of lawn bowling.

That was seven years ago, when, Miller said, he was dragged to the lushly manicured lawn tucked into a corner of Elizabeth Park to try the game."A friend hounded me and hounded me to come try it.

I was dragged there, literally," Miller said Saturday before demonstrating the game to a new player. "I only went to get him off my back. After that first game, I hated to leave. It's a challenging game."

... if I like it." There are three other lawn bowling clubs in Connecticut: one each in West Hartford, Bridgeport and Greenwich. Bob Lunden, a member of the West Hartford club, which has about 55 members, said it is also in search of new members. ...

Chandler Grinnell, 15, of Larchmont, left, Brendan McGlynn, 14, of Sleepy Hollow and Kian Gormley, 15, of Rye won't be standing still at Rye Town Park for long today as they follow their parents' example by competing in the Westchester Triathlon.

HEADLINE:

STORY:

RYE - Usually endurance sports are reserved for grown-ups, the serious and disciplined kind. The under-18 set is busy with soccer practices and swim teams. The solitary distances of a marathon or a 25-mile bike ride - and the grueling training - are difficult to embrace.
But there are, of course, exceptions.

Today, three high school sophomores will be competing in the 2007 Westchester Triathlon. And don't think for a second that they're your average teens.

Brendan McGlynn, Kian Gormley and Chandler Grinnell play the usual array of team sports. But with fathers and mothers who are marathoners and even Ironman triathletes, they all have seen the appeal of endurance sports up close.....

... of a nearly 1.5-kilometer swim in Long Island Sound, a 40K bike ride through Rye, Port Chester, Harrison and Greenwich and a 10K run. The three combined into an Olympic distance race requires disciplined training. 'Any one of these events by itself ...
