Where would we be without the timeless lessons of clichés?

Shakespeare - as taught by my 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Werther - is perhaps the best example of the art. His gift of language, in all of its complexity and character, has given rise to some of our most enduring turns of phrase. To this day, we wander along the primrose path, encounter star-crossed lovers, and come full circle. In other words: the game is up; the play's the thing; and the world is one's oyster.

But Shakespeare certainly took some inspiration - if not also some lessons in poetry and punnery, from that ultimate source text, our Scriptures. I've included some of my own favorite clichés from the Hebrew Bible here: "A leopard cannot change its spots," "Ashes to ashes; dust to dust," "Am I my brother's keeper?" "Beat swords into ploughshares," "Be fruitful and multiply," "By the skin of your teeth," "By the sweat of your brow," and that classic from Ecclesiastes, made even more popular by the Byrds in their immortal 1965 song Turn, Turn, Turn: "To everything there is a season."

Finally, one of my all time favorite clichés - perhaps the most timeworn and timeless of them all, is the one I spoke about on the evening that began Rosh Hashanah; the most important teaching of Torah: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

Whether clichés come from William Shakespeare, or the Hebrew Scriptures; clichés become clichés because of their valued truth. Yet, sometimes we dismiss them, because we think they're overused, sentimental, stale and sappy. Here are four examples that I referred to in my sermon:

"We're all more capable than we think we are"

"The sun will come out tomorrow"

"When life hands you lemons, make lemonade."

"Put on a happy face"

These four statements, in particular, are often dismissed as trite. Some of them we can practically hear being sung in our heads (cue the soundtrack from Annie here.) But before we close our ears to the schmaltzy song and dance, take a moment to consider the cliché's subtle - perhaps even hidden - power.

Sometimes, in times of adversity, we even get angry or offended by the lack of empathy in clichés. But the truth inherent in these "Pollyanna-ish" clichés is important. Clichés have lessons to teach and important truths to express. And in the end, what perhaps makes a cliché eternal is that it is wise in spite of itself. Echoing our own very human need for the familiarity of ritual and tradition, we, as humans, might need the cliché to help us define those moments in our lives which defy description.

Like Shakespeare, and like the cliché, the human struggle is eternal. It never goes out of style and it never subsides. No person escapes this life unscathed. Since the time of our biblical ancestors, the need for love, acceptance, hope, and connection has played out in the human drama, and repeats itself in every generation. And just as we would never dismiss our Scriptures, or consider Shakespeare anything but a literary genius (for liberal arts majors, perhaps a little more so than for those science and engineering types), we should not be so quick to turn ourselves from the truths that have been part of our human experience for centuries.

Take, for example, this week's Torah portion: the story of Noah. There is perhaps no story in the Bible that we know better. Even just a few months ago, when Hurricane Irene struck our community, the story of Noah was very much in the minds of all those of us who feared the storm. Noah, and his Ark, and the animals marching two-by-two are symbols that could all perhaps fall into the cliché category. They are elements of a story that tells us what we already know - that even when we feel most vulnerable to destruction and danger, we live in hope that beyond the storm, there is safety, peace, and sunlight. The rainbow and the dove are symbols which perhaps exemplify the cliché above all others. But consider their power - and their power to change minds and hearts - even to this very day.

In the spirit of Noah's story, I'm enclosing the full sermon text in which I talk about how the four clichés to which I referred above can help, in a very real and concrete way, to move us from despair to hope, from inertia to action, and from the mundane to the sacred. And in the spirit of literary light, I am also enclosing a link to some of my favorite Shakespearean phrases. I think that Mrs. Werther would be proud.

Wishing you peace and light this Shabbat,

--Rabbi Mitch

10/28/11 GREENWICH RESIDENT LINDA MCMAHON:What Washington Can Learn from Real Job Creators

Dear Friend,

Throughout October, I met with more than 60 women-owned small businesses across the state and held a series of roundtable discussions with some of the women responsible for employing more than 92,000 workers in Connecticut.

While the reasons for starting their own business were as diverse as the businesses themselves, there was a common theme to all of their stories. Government must get out of the way in order for small business owners to create jobs to get the 160,000 unemployed in Connecticut back to work.

To share with you what I heard from small business owners from Enfield to Milford and everywhere in between, I wrote an Op-Ed in the Connecticut Mirror that talks about the fears the real job creators have about the direction of our country and the state of our economy. Please take a moment to read it and view highlights from our tour at JobCreatorsforLinda.com.

After meeting with these hardworking small business owners, I am more convinced than ever that the jobs people so desperately need will not be created by government. If you agree, then I ask you to consider supporting our campaign.

Sincerely,

Linda

10/28/11 The Greenwich Topix News Message Board - (11 stories) - TOP STORY: The E-Mailing Of Nude Photos By Eighth-Grade Female Students At WMS

Topix Greenwich

Greenwich - News October 28, 2011

8th Grade Sexting Investigation in Greenwich
8th Grade Sexting Investigation in Greenwich (Patch)
Greenwich Police are investigating the e-mailing of nude photos by eighth-grade female students at Western Middle School, Greenwich Patch has learned....

"On Tuesday, the way (school administrators) found out about the texting is they were alerted to a rumor about a possible fight between two or three girls (from Western) and one of the girls from Port Chester (NY)," Greenwich Public Schools spokesman Kim Eves said Thursday. "In the process of investigating that rumor, they were alerted to the that fact that this texting back and forth of nude pictures was happening and they called in our security director, and the police were alerted."

Eves added, "We are not investigating. The police are investigating."

Greenwich Police Sgt. Mark Zuccerella of the Special Victims Section said, "This is an ongoing investigation that I cannot comment on." He added, "We don't have the full facts ... if this is actually a sexting case or not without talking to everybody."

"Sexting is a term coined by the media that generally refers to sending, receiving, or forwarding sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude photos or sexually suggestive messages through text message or e-mail," according to the Crisis Intervention Center, a Ft. Smith, AR-based agency that provides assistance to victims of and education about domestic violence and sexual abuse.

According to Eves, Western's principal Terry Starr-Klein sent a voice-mail message via ParentLink to the parents of all 169 eighth-graders Wednesday night "alerting them the situation, asking them to have a discussion with their children about sending inappropariate material that has a legal consequence and to be more proactive on discussing this issue with their children and that (the school) will have another parent" forum to discuss Internet safety regarding their children.

The school district's mental health professionals met with all 8th-grade students on Wednesday to discuss "internet safety - that it is inappropriate, illegal and unhealthy" to send sexually-explicit messages via cellphones and computers, Eves said. "They met with the girls and the boys separately" at the school on Western Junior Highway.

Eves said that "at this point" there isn't any indication school computers were used to send the nude photos. She also said that "some of the students involved have been identified, but not all of them." She did not have information on which school the Port Chester students attend.

At this point, Eves said, there also isn't any indication that students' actions would warrant discipline. However, there is school district policy dictating disciplinary actions if any student is arrested.

Eves also said, "Digital citizenship is the overarching strand in our sixth- to eighth-grade media curriculum. Inappropriate e-mail is addressed so they’ve heard this message."

10/26/11 Greenwich Real Estate - NEW WEBSITE LAUNCH

A while ago I promised myself that I would never send out more than one email per month about Greenwich real estate. Holding to this promise I have decided to use my October email to announce the launch of my completely redesigned website, GreenwichCT.com. Just as I had done before on my old site, I will be blogging on a regular basis about what I see happening in the market. Don't hesitate to chime in if you have any questions, comments or areas you'd like me to talk about more. What I am excited about on this new site is all the features it offers to help you search through the Greenwich real estate market. Please feel free to play around, create your own account and take note of what interests you in the market.

Over the coming months, I plan to expand the pages on the site to include more detailed data on Greenwich. I have a feeling that this will be an ever-evolving venture, if I want to make sure the site is current and accurate. I have spent a significant amount of time and effort on this website, because I truly believe it is the direction in which we are all going and the best possible resource I can offer my clients to help them buy and/or sell their homes. There are a lot of neat websites out there (some that I use on a daily basis) that will be helpful for looking up real estate, but the problem is that most are set up on a macro level and don't have the capability to accurately provide a search and view of an individual local market. This is where I come in with GreenwichCT.com.

I built the site to include data and features that I think will best benefit my clients. If you see anything that you feel would be helpful in your search to buy, sell, or just research Greenwich real estate, please don't hesitate to speak up. I'm in the service industry and it's my job to make sure you are happy with - well - my service.

Sincerely,

Scott
