07/16/10 the Only Guy Arrested For Drug Possession In The Fourth Congressional Race Stakes Out Jim Himes' Hometown

Robert Merkle, who owns Management Recruiters in Westport, is one of three candidates running in the Aug. 10 primary for the Republican nomination in the fourth congressional district. Mr. Merkle is facing off against Dan Debicella and Bridgeport businessman Rick Torres in the primary to challenge incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. Jim Himes this fall.

Mr. Merkle, who is a Norwalk resident, made a brief appearance in Greenwich on Monday to a small group of supporters.

Mr. Merkle is set to appear tonight at 8 in Stamford.

Monday night, Mr. Merkle took several positions to the right of current officeholders, particularly when it came to the powers of federal government, which he said had to be curtailed.

Mr. Merkle said. “There are approximately 18 specific areas in the constitution which the federal government is supposed to be in charge of, defense, border security, currency, international commerce and relations to name a few."

Mr. Merkle said he envisions cutting the Department of Education, Department of Labor and the Department of Energy.

He was questioned by Greenwich resident Dick Case on this who asked him which of the 18 areas in the constitution gave the government the power to work on transportation in the state. Mr. Merkle admitted it wasn’t one of the areas.

This lead to direct questioning from Greenwich resident Tim Graham who asked Mr. Merkle what he would do to help people in Fairfield County if elected. Saying that state programs can be paid for when less money is sent to the federal government.

Mr. Graham urged Mr. Merkle to worry less about national issues like immigration and the size of the government and instead address local issues like power consumption, congestion on Interstate 95 and the need for changes in the state transit system.

Mr. Merkle did not say if the the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency should be eliminated or if it was one of the "approximately 18 specific areas" in the constitution which the federal government is supposed to be in charge of.

Mr. Merkle said he is scheduled to swing through Greenwich again before the primary, but would not give a specific date.

07/16/10 Food Drive at Congressman Jim Himes' Bridgeport and Stamford locations

Dear Friends,

With many people out of town during the summer, food pantries have been struggling to keep supplied. This has been particularly problematic for Bridgeport's food pantries, especially after the tornado.

I recently received an email from the Bridgeport Rescue Mission asking for help. I turn to you, as involved and concerned supporters, to help our neighbors in need.

We will be holding food drives at our Campaign Headquarters in Bridgeport (350 Fairfield Avenue) and the Democratic Headquarters in Stamford (123 High Ridge Road) for the next two weeks. You can drop off cans on your way to or from work or when you come in to volunteer.

The contact for Bridgeport is Aaron Turner aaron@himesforcongress.com, and the contact for Stamford is Cara Pavlock cpavlock@gmail.com.

Below is the list of items that the Bridgeport Rescue Mission said they needed most:

  • large boxes of cold and hot cereal
  • pasta and jarred spaghetti sauce
  • boxed macaroni and cheese
  • large bags of rice or beans
  • Ramen noodles
  • instant mashed potatoes or canned potatoes (28-ounce and larger)
  • canned vegetables (14-ounce and larger)
  • canned fruits
  • canned meats such as: beef stew, canned tuna fish, canned hams and/or SPAM
  • instant Jell-O mixes
  • granola bars
  • iced tea and lemonade mixes

Thank you for your commitment to our community. I hope you'll join me in helping our neighbors who need us most.

Sincerely,

Jim Himes

COMMENT:

Please consider helping out those less fortunate in Fairfield County.

Donating a little food from your families table can make a big difference to our disabled, elderly, underemployed and unemployed neighbors.

In The Wealthiest County;

In The Wealthiest State;

In The Wealthiest Nation On Earth;

No Child Or Family Should Want For Food.

Shame On All Of Us When Food Panties

And Social Service Agencies Run Low On Food

What Does The Bible Say About Feeding The Hungry?

If you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.
Isaiah 58:10 NSRV

Happy are those who are concerned for the poor; the Lord will help them when they are in trouble.
Psalm 41:1 TEV

If you refuse to listen to the cry of the poor, your own cry will not be heard.
Proverbs 21:13 TEV

God always keeps His promises; he judges in favor of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.
Psalm 146:6-7 TEV

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill," and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has not works, is dead.
James 2:14-17 NRSV

Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Defend the rights of the poor and needy,
Proverbs 31:8-9 NSRV

Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.
Isaiah 1:17

He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord and he will repay him for his deed.
Proverbs 19:17

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
1 John 4:9-11

"For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.'

Then these righteous ones will reply, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? And the King will tell them, 'I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'"
Matthew 25:31-40 NLT

Ephesians 4:28 NLT

Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us.

07/16/10 Greenwich Resident Ned Lamont Reminds Democrats:25 Days and Counting!

Dear Friend,

In the past few months, I have written to you with pride about the growth of Ned's grassroots campaign. We have opened field offices across the state, welcomed 2,500 volunteers to our campaign, made more than 600,000 phone calls, and held 15-20 canvasses every weekend.

And we're seeing great results. A new Quinnipiac University poll came out yesterday showing Ned with a solid lead among likely voters (the first time this measure has been used so far). In fact, Ned actually increased his lead from the June poll among registered Democrats, and now leads by 20 points!

Our online grassroots campaign is gathering strength as well. Our Facebook page features images and videos from the campaign trail, plus the latest news, updates, and a schedule of events. Click "like" on the top of our page, and then join us out on the campaign trail.

Grow the online power of this campaign by clicking this link and joining the campaign on Facebook.

The next few weeks will be just as exciting online as they will be out in the field. We will soon launch a full resource for registering to vote, finding voting information, and getting in contact with our field team, right on the front page of the website.

As one of our most loyal supporters, I also want to offer you the opportunity to get a first peek of one of our exciting new web tools. Our "People" page will allow you to connect with other supporters, upload pictures and video, and become a part of our online community - together, we can help Ned get Connecticut back on offense.

Please click here to join our new online community!

Thanks,

Joe

07/16/1`0 Greenwich Resident Linda McMahon Says:Pick one

Linda McMahon For Senate

Greenwich Roundup –

Richard Blumenthal will be the guest on Sunday's "Face the State," which airs on Hartford station WFSB.

The program's moderator, Dennis House, says that while recording the interview, he encountered "a very different Dick Blumenthal."

House notes that Blumenthal "used to the be the most accessible public official in our land ... offering reporters his personal cell phone number and granting interviews at a moment's notice. His eager willingness to go on camera was a running joke among his staff, journalists, columnists and radio disc jockeys ... even himself."

Those days are over. House says Blumenthal dodged questions and "delivered answers to something else that seemed rehearsed."

A newspaper reporter thinks Blumenthal "has been in absentia." A columnist writes that he "seems to have gone underground." A prominent political consultant says he appears "unprepared to shift into a dialogue on national issues."

My agenda's no secret: I'm running to stop runaway spending in Washington, prevent middle-class tax increases and put Connecticut back to work.

I'm not avoiding anyone. As I've toured downtowns, visited ballparks, and attended local festivals -- 600 events so far -- I've invited the media to come along.

Connecticut deserves a Senator who faces the public and the press.

Here's what you can do today to help our campaign bring change to Washington:
