Greenwich, Connecticut BOE facility director Tony Burns fired ...
By Claudette Rothman

A Board of Education employee in Greenwich, Connecticut was fired for allegedly taking "kick-backs" on the Hamilton Ave school project. It is alleged that Tony Burns, the former Facility Director for the BOE, received payments from ...

History

In 2005, the elementary school closed its doors after it was discovered that the long-standing building had mold and structural problems.

What was supposed to be an 18-month project lasted four years and cost the taxpayers of Greenwich more than $31 millions.

The school, which houses 317 children, was forced to relocate its students to modulars that were located at Western Middle School.

In 2008, the modulars were forced to shut down after it was discovered that they too had a mold problem.

In 2009, Worth Construction Co. sued the town of Greenwich for almost $6 million for damages and losses they incurred because of numerous delays caused by the school’s building committee and other handlers of the projects, including Tony Burns.

Also in 2009, a group of Hamilton Avenue School parents sued the town saying the school failed to address “persistent” and “pervasive” mold problems at the modular facility......

Superintendent of Schools Sidney Freund believes his success as the town's latest education leader depends heavily on the success of his teachers and how effectively his administration supports them.

That's why some of his first moves since taking over as the superintendent have included holding off on introducing new initiatives that might add to the burden on educators and expanding the use of so-called "data teams" to set priorities from the ground up, he said.....

The Public Schools Don't Need Any Freaking "DATA TEAMS".
They Need Empowered Parental Investigative Teams Who Will Put And End To The Fraud Waste And Abuse That Is Bankrupting The Single Family Homeowners Of Greenwich.

For FIVE Days This Is All That Western Middle School Parents Have Been Told .....
January 21, 2010
Dear WMS Parents,
I am writing to inform you about some facilities work that will occur at Western this weekend.
A steam pipe leak in the crawlspace below the art storage room was reported. There was excessive humidity and condensation in the closet, presumably due to the steam leak.
An environmental investigation of the adjoining art rooms and storage closet was conducted by Charles Schwartz representing Environmental Assessments & Solutions, Inc.
The report noted, "no mold like staining, odor, or irritation were experienced in the adjoining rooms including the Kiln Room, E2 classroom, E6 classroom, or the E4 computer classroom.
Based upon our observations we conducted bioaerosol (mold in air) and asbestos air testing in the concern storage room and all adjoining rooms and halls with rapid turn-around. Asbestos air samples with TEM analysis identified no asbestos in air in any of the sample locations." Mr. Schwartz did note "visible mold like staining on thewindow, exterior wall and wood cabinets in the storage room.
"There was no musty odor nor did the investigator experience irritation symptoms while in the storage room."
Please note this is a locked storage room that students do not access. Based on this information, a mold remediation contractor was immediately employed to conduct interim control measures directed on-site by the investigator including the following actions:
1. The E2 storage room was placed under negative pressure with a HEPA filtered negative air machine, then the room was locked and sealed.
2. The Kiln Room was surface cleaned using HEPA vacuums and biocidal single use rags. Following these interim control measures retesting for bioaerosols was conducted and the results confirmed no asbestos in the air in any of the sample locations."
As you know from our summer facility projects, the Connecticut State Department of Health requires that all abatement projects, including this one, must be done when no childrenunder the age of eighteen are in the building.
The leak repair work and required abatement of the E2 storage room will be conducted this weekend.
Thus, all afterschool activities and the late bus on Friday, January 22nd, will be canceled.
Although we understand this is an issue of concern, we are pleased with the rapid response of the district and our team of consultants.
We are relieved that this report confirms that at no time was the health of students or staff in danger.
A copy of the testing results letter from the environmental consultant is available upon request.
Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions.
Sincerely, Stacey Gross, Ed.D.

01/27/10 Congressional hopeful tells Greenwich resident Jim Himes,"Our economy needs real stimulus"

Connecticut's recession continues to get worse. Official unemployment in our state is now 9 percent, which is really closer to 17 percent when you include the under-employed. We lost over 87,000 jobs last year in Connecticut. Every middle class family has been directly or indirectly impacted by this job loss, and the federal government has failed to come up with solutions that work.

Our congressman, Jim Himes, has failed us on the economy by rubber-stamping Nancy Pelosi's big government proposals. The stimulus package passed by Washington has failed to stimulate the economy and has done nothing to stem the tide of unemployment facing our state. Ask yourself -- has your family benefited from the stimulus package? Unfortunately, the main result of the stimulus package is another $10,000 in federal government debt for every family in Fairfield County. The stimulus package has been an expensive failure.

Government cannot end the recession by spending more money. Small businesses will need to lead us out of the recession. Small business owners have created more than 90 percent of the new jobs in our state in the last 10 years. While big corporations are great to have in Connecticut, it is the little guy who really drives our economic growth. Government's role should be to set up the best tax, regulation, and legal system for small businesses to create good jobs for Connecticut families -- and I believe Washington can still take action to accomplish this goal.

First, the federal government should repeal the remainder of the stimulus package and use it to cut payroll taxes for small businesses and middle class families. Less than 20 percent of the stimulus has actually been spent, meaning there is over $500 billion just sitting in Washington. We could cut the payroll tax in half for the next year and still spend less than that. This tax cut would mean the average middle class family would receive $1,500 of their income back, and small businesses would get 3 percent of their payroll back.

Instead of the pork-barrel projects in the stimulus package, we can directly help small businesses and middle class families. Instead of give-aways to special interest groups, a direct tax cut will enable small businesses to hire more people and put money directly into middle class families' pockets. Best of all, the deficit would be lowered because the tax cut would be less expensive than the current "stimulus" package.

Second, we need to stop Jim Himes' out-of-control spending that has led to a record $1.4 trillion deficit this year. Instead, we should implement a federal spending cap to eliminate our deficit by 2015. I propose we limit government spending increases to the rate of inflation plus population growth -- about 1-2 percent under current conditions. America is projected to have a deficit of over $9 trillion in the next 10 years, but this is based on the assumption that politicians continue to grow government at 7 percent per year (which they historically have done).

A federal spending cap would force politicians of both parties to make choices about what our spending priorities are as a nation. Without a forcing responsibility through a spending cap, politicians from both parties will take the easy way out when it comes to making the hard choices we need to make about government spending. A spending cap will force the politicians to get serious about controlling government spending and entitlement reform.

We need real stimulus for our economy. Our high unemployment numbers send a clear message: Jim Himes and Nancy Pelosi are getting it wrong. My hope is that both Republicans and Democrats can work together to implement the real solutions I have proposed for small business and middle class families.

Dan Debicella is the Republican state senator representing Stratford, Shelton, Monroe and Seymour. He is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Democrat Jim Himes for the U.S. Congress in Connecticut's Fourth District.
