12/18/09 GREENWICH BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING BRIEF: December 17, 2009

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING BRIEF:
MONTHLY MEETING - Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Greenwich High School

Recognition of Retiring Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Susan O. Wallerstein
Dr. Wallerstein was honored for her many years of service with the
Greenwich Public Schools by members of the school and broader Greenwich
communities. Dr. Freund announced that since the District has not yet been
able to identify an individual to assume the position, now entitled
Managing Director of Operations (MDO), Dr. Wallerstein has graciously
agreed to remain for one more month through the end of January 2010. The
search for an MDO will be re-opened.

Facilities Audit Report
Dr. Wallerstein and Anthony Byrne, Director of Facilities, presented the
Board with a report on the recently conducted Facilities Audit. The audit
report is used to update and inform the 15-year capital improvement plan.

Action on the Superintendent's Proposed 2010-11 Budget:
The Board of Education unanimously voted (8-0) to approve the
Superintendent's proposed 2010-11 Budget with the following changes:
- remove $285,000 from the Natural Gas for Heating line (replacing
estimated budget numbers with recently received actual costs)
- add $100,000 to accelerate the SmartBoard Implementation Plan
- add $135,000 for professional learning for approximately 100 teachers in
the International Baccalaureate framework
- remove $38,000 from Hamilton Avenue School budget for the swimming
program
- add $38,000 to the Hamilton Avenue School program for an enhanced
Science program
The approved budget of $131,509,261 is within the guidelines established
by the Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET). The budget is now submitted
to and reviewed by the BET over the next several months. The BET will act
on the Board of Education and other Town Department budgets in March 2010.

questions/concerns about basic math skills

BOE 2009-10 Agenda Plan
Reviewed and adjusted per discussion (addition of January 2010 Board
Retreat). The plan is available as part of Board materials for each work
session and regular monthly meeting.

The next meeting is the Board of Education Work Session on January 7,
2010, 7:00 PM at the Havemeyer Building.
